vob widescreen in virtualdub conversion

Hi again,
This is following my previous topic regarding this subject where i am still having problems with converting my vob files from dvd into avi. Basically when i import a vob file from a commercial dvd that is shot in widescreen and place it in virtual dub-mpeg2 , the picture is stretched vertically and hence it's not in widescreen anymore. How can i correct this problem.
I do use vegas 5 for my avi editing but i need to import them as the original widescreen format. Converting vob in avi with vegas takes ages. Vrtual dub is faster.

I noted though that if i import into virtual dub a home made dvd vob file that i capture from tv of a widecsreen film, when i import it in virtual dub, it retains the widescreen picture. So why it does not retain the widecreen with 2 commercial dvds i have tried so far? Is it a setting problem in virtual dub and what can i do?

So far i have tried the Panasonic DV codec. It gives smoothish playback in Vegas but no widescreen avi's of my original widescreen vobs. The only one that gave me the widescreen avis was the Mainconcept dv codec 2.0.4 BUT no smooth playback in Vegas of my avis. What can i do and try please? Help please.
Many thanks

I use version 2.4.16 of the Main Concept DV Codec. It works great and is extremely close to the quality of the Vegas DV cocec (too bad we can't use that one outside of Vegas and DVDA).

1. your questions may cross over the line of "fair use" and legal use of material ..

2. i am pretty sure i answered your question just recently .. look up the definition of "anamorphic" , in fact right click on the preview window in virtualdubmod and select 16:9 if you want ... still the same content - just changes the way it is displayed, no mater if 4:3 or 16:9 , it is still stored on the disk as 720x480.

when you import such content into vegas, just change the property of the media, though if your project properties dont match, you will end up with letterboxed image ..

Gosh i had no idea regarding this anamorphic term. I am more confused than before, but at least i am understanding the problem i had.
Ok, so now i used the Virtual dub-mpeg2 to convert the vob to avi. I used the 16.9 and fastest setting in Virtual dub . So far so good.
I then imported the avi into vegas 5 and hey!!! Widescreen images on the output. The template was set to pal dv widescreen automatically i gues. The video does not rubn smooth until i chang the properties to just pal dv, Then it's ok. i can work and experiment.

Now how can i make my experiments/edits with these avis from these amorphous vob and after i render the changes to mpeg2, make sure that they remain in anamorphous video, not just plain widescreen???

Does this make sense?
Thanks for the concern regarding the legality of playing around with commercial vobs. That was not the point. What i have is some classical concert that came out on dvd and the same concert was given on radio with commentary and all i want is to make my own test copy (where i happen to be playing in it) to include the radio commentary on the dvd. Obviously i cannot work in mpeg as i have to extend the in between the music piece to fit the commentary as it is longer than the dvd version.

So it's all for my own use and to create something that i can only make.
Thanks
