Voice Recording

I have been trying to add voice recording with limited success. Initially the voice track was armed and recording initiated, but the volume was not sufficient to effectively register. The volume settings for the device in the Control Panel have been set to maximum and the volume control within the track does not improve the situation. I now have gone back to the project and am unable to "arm" the recording device (maybe I have disabled something ). I am using Windows v7 and a Logitech microphone with USB interface. My questions are:

1. How can I get back to connect the "arm" function, and
2. Can the volume on the recorded tracks be increased.

Can anyone offer any solutions please?

Hi John,

Using USB microphones can be iffy sometimes. You have to be sure the proper driver is installed and that Windows and your application are both "looking" at the same input.

Always make sure you plug in your mic to the same USB connection. Right click on the "speaker" icon on your task bar and go to "recording devices" and make sure your USB microphone is selected, then go to properties/levels and make sure "boost" is set to its highest (usually +20 or +30 db). I would also set the microphone level itself to about 75% as a starting point.

Next go to Movie Studio. Click on Options/preferences/audio devices/ default audio recording device and make sure the same recording device you selected above is selected.

At this point you will probably have something like "Microsoft Sound Mapper" (This actually depends upon your Motherboard and/or sound card drivers.) selected at the top of the audio device page of Movie Studio, and "Logitech USB microphone" selected as your audio device type.

If all goes well you will be set up to record audio from your USB Microphone in Movie Studio at a reasonable level.

Speaking of levels, you have two level controls on each audio track in Movie Studio. One is the "slider" all the way to the left of the track. The other is to add an audio envelope to the track and move the envelope up or down as needed.

You can also control the level of each other audio track and the overall project level.

Hope this helps.

Thank Jillian. I have had some success with the tips you provided although I could not implement the volume control using the "slider". The control in the audio envelope is OK but the "slider" could not be found. Again thanks for the help.
