VP 21 hang - memory leak with Boris FX Particle illusion?

bitman wrote on 11/21/2023, 8:15 AM

I was goofing around with Boris FX plugin (2024) particle illusion going in and out of the plugin "launch PI 2024". On the timeline was a short 4K clip in Vegas 21 (sound muted) with just an empty event above it with Boris type on text + particle illusion in the FX chain. It was going well for one or two hours (I lost track) but suddenly Vegas hung and my whole system was blocked. I noticed the Vegas RAM memory indicator was turned yellow and showing over 54 GB, probably causing the hang. I know particle illusion is memory heavy, but my gut feeling fears a memory leak. But of course I could be wrong ....

@bitman Hi, have you read this post @Reyfox & I have been updating https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-20-and-bcc-particle-illusion--141828/#ca894923

@Former user , I missed that post, as I am reading it, it looks pretty much the same issue (if it is an issue at all). Maybe it is just the way it is, particle illusion a memory hog, and one needs to watch the memory gauge like a hawk!

Nevertheless, memory should be released when not needed anymore as soon as possible, something the developers @VEGASDerek ? , could look into, or may at least give a good explanation as to why Vegas "needs" to hang on to memory when removing that plugin from the chain (we should not have to exit Vegas to free memory after removing that plugin from the chain) ...

@bitman Yep, I take it from that comment your Vegas also hangs onto the RAM after closing PI & yep I installed 265GB to be used if anything wants to use it but it should also release it once closing that fx

My system seems to be able to continue but in my case if it uses 200GB I've still got 56GB to keep everything else going (that's my theory, whether it's right or not i dunno), but you getting a hang having 64GB which is normally plenty & a very common amount isn't good, it does need attention by someone 😒

------

What I've noticed is it isn't dependant on how many emitters you have going in PI, I've spent, as you did, a couple of hrs just playing with the Basic emitter learning the controls, not too many particles because that does slow the PI timeline down & the RAM just keeps increasing, as if it's layering on top of existing RAM building up all the time.

Well my GPU is working, interesting that RAM is at an acceptable amount 🤷‍♂️😂
