VP18 vs VP19 RAM Usage at Startup of Same Project

Reyfox wrote on 7/1/2022, 8:15 AM

I made a project in VP19 Build 643 that is 4:30 long. Smartsound music, some Boris Gamma, SeMW and various transitions from Boris. Vitascene Pro 3, and GL. Just 2 tracks... video and music. Opening in VP19, 5.4GB of RAM is being used.

Copying the same project from VP19 to VP18 Build 527, same settings in Preference, Project and anything else I can think of, RAM usage when on the timeline is 1.8GB.

I checked to make sure all the "stuff" I did was present in VP18, and it was. The RAM usage didn't make a difference if I started VP18 first or VP19. Now, I am wondering "why" the huge difference in RAM usage.... I'm open to suggestions.

I became aware of this when trying to add Vegas Slow Motion to a short test clip in my VP19 project. I watched RAM go over 11GB.

For me, something is wrong with the way VP19 is using RAM compared to VP18....

@j-v, reading your reply, I decided to open VP18 first, copy the project to VP19 and the results were about the same in the first image.

In the second image, I copied a small 1080HD project I made in VP18 a while back, and VP19 still used more RAM, about 1GB more.

I think using RAM is a good thing, The application will utilise for best performance out of your reources. RAM should be high for video editing.

Reyfox wrote on 7/1/2022, 12:03 PM

@Robin-Siddique I agree. The software should utilize the computer hardware to get the best performance possible. But for the videos that I tested, there were no performance issues using VP18 vs VP19. And watching RAM increase to over 11GB for a simple 4 1/2 minute video when testing the Vegas Slow Motion on one of the clips, caused me some concern. Then when I decided to start a new project by File>New, only about 1GB of RAM was released. Restarting Vegas with no project on the timeline, RAM is at 875MB.

Something is wrong with the way Vegas is handling RAM and not releasing it unless you exit with a blank timeline.

@Reyfox Hi, I've noticed Vegas using RAM differently since the last update, I had Taskmanager open (forgot to close it) & Vegas open, my RAM normally ticks along at about roughly 12%

but it was at 22%, nothing happening in Vegas, (clearing the Vegas fx search box made no difference)

4,327MB

I have an Advanced system care thing on my desktop that i can click to clear the RAM, it told me 1.2GB had been released & Vegas in Taskmanager went down to 3.7MB

I closed everything apart from a couple of windows folders, Taskmanager & Vegas but in the Performance window it still showed 22%

when i closed Vegas the RAM amount went down to the normal 12%

I've seen it hang on to a lot more RAM than that when using some fxs & only closing Vegas clears it,

PS. just opened Vegas again, the RAM only went up to 13%. (when i open Vegas i have to use the down arrow key & scroll down through the fxs, if i don't the search doesn't see my custom presets, that i did, no change to the RAM)

Reyfox wrote on 7/2/2022, 5:21 AM

@Former user, you have a ton of RAM available, while I have "only" 32GB, so I notice when RAM starts to creep up. I have Task Manager always open to monitor hardware usage. So when I see RAM at 11GB for Vegas when testing Slow Motion on a 5second clip on my 4.5 minute video, something is wrong. Opening the same project in VP18 showed a tremendous difference in RAM usage doing the same thing.

If I had a 16GB RAM computer, I would be in a terrible mess and unable to work with projects that require many tracks and FX.

@Reyfox I just noticed RAM was high,  Vegas had 4GB RAM in the Processes menu, i clicked on the Advanced System Care - Clean RAM button, that reduced it to a few mb, but the graph still showed 20GB, no Dynamic RAM set in Vegas & no project, media etc., closing Vegas cleared all that, yeah if i only had 32GB i think this would be a problem 😒🤔

Reyfox wrote on 7/9/2022, 12:48 PM

@Former user I hope this is fixed before VP20 is released. I've watched simple projects grow in RAM usage. Take the same project in VP18, RAM is way way less. Even if deciding to start a New project, File>New, the RAM isn't being released causing me with my paltry 32GB RAM to have to exit and restart VP19.

In VPro 18 default amount of thumbnails visible per event is Head, Center, Tail and in VPro 19 it is All. Maybe you can check with your project if this makes the difference by making that setting for both programs the same

@j-v I only have head and tail for thumbnails on the events on the timeline in both 18 and 19. I checked Preferences to make sure they were the same. In 18, Dynamic Ram was default 200mb. In 19, you have the slider and it's hard to get it exactly the same, but close enough. And the 100mb difference doesn't account for the gigabyte difference in RAM usage.

70Gb!

processes in order of RAM usage, Vegas only showing 4GB

closing Vegas cleared it

Reyfox wrote on 7/10/2022, 11:09 AM

@Former user wow.... that's a lot of RAM being used. Screenshot below of VP19 after I start a new blank project, and Project settings. What I did was File>New... to clear out my old project. Exit VP, then restart it. That's the resulting screenshot below.

Something is definitely going on. Why the huge difference in RAM.

@Reyfox Still a problem, I've got a few programs open but Taskmanager told me it was Vegas 20 sitting doing nothing but hogging lots of RAM,

I'd just closed Vegas in this pic, only then was the 100GB RAM get released 😒

Reyfox wrote on 4/28/2023, 4:46 AM

It's not only Vegas that has RAM issues. I've experienced the same problem with other software where the only way to clear the RAM is to exit the software completely.
