VP8a Failed to Install on Windows Vista SP1

I'm trying to install VP8a on a Windows Vista SP1 system. The installation went all the way to near the end when it barfed with a series of error messages:

Module d:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Audio\sfppack1.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147010895. Contact your support personnel.
Module d:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Audio\sfppack2.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147010895. Contact your support personnel.

Module d:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Audio\xpvinyl.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147010895. Contact your support personnel.

I clicked my way through (Ignore) all of these. The installation finished.

However, when I tried to run VP8a, it barfed big time with the error message:

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002). Click OK to terminate the application.

It never ran at all.

Is this a known problem?

Thanks.

Same symptoms and outcome when I tried to install VP8b.

I'm running Vista with no problems on 8a or b.

I know that Vista comes with dot net 3 so the included dot net on the install is probably omitted. But if you haven't got dot net 3 install and turned on in windows features (which happend to me once), the install will fail

So the only thing I can think of is that dot net is off or not install. Go to "programs and features" click on the windows features and make sure dot net is installed.

Hmmm... The included Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 has three elements. Only the XPS Viewer was enabled on my system. The other two were not.

The un-enabled ones were the Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation and Non-HTTP Activation. Were they the same two you had to tweak?

Well, that's not it. It did not fix it for me. Still same symptoms.

This is actually a serious issue. That service pack will go live sometime in the future and I would be concerned it might cause problems with Vegas. I would suggest you open a ticket with support on this issue.

I thought I made it obvious as I separated the 1st line from the rest. In system requirements
it says you need SP2

TGS, as the subject line says, the OP is running Vista, not XP so SP2 is irrelevant.

D'OH!

I'll post what Vegas technical support says when this is resolved.

did you run the installer "as administrator"?
SVoBa wrote on 1/30/2008, 6:23 PM
Yes, i did. I'm also logged in as an administrator on my system. Unfortunately, that did not make any difference.

However, what's the point of trying to open a support ticket with SCS? Vista SP1 hasn't been released yet so why should they support someone installing Vegas on a release candidate, or beta?

Well, maybe they'd be interested, or maybe they plan to release another point version when SP1 goes live, but in terms of a support policy, they shouldn't provide support to someone installing their software on a pre-release of an OS.

FWIW, my Windows Vista SP1 32-bit system is an HP nc8430 (stock laptop model: dual-core, 4 GB memory, etc.).
rmack350 wrote on 1/30/2008, 7:43 PM
Are you saying that HP sold it to you with SP1 on it?

No, I did not say that.

I want to thank the SCS development and support teams for their very quick response to this issue and related thread on the DVDA Forum.

The cause for this failure was a messed up installation of the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" on my system. For some reason, that will remain a mystery to all of us, a run-time component of that installation was missing. Vegas and DVDA rely on that one for their installation and subsequent execution.

The fix was a complete uninstall of the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistribution" component. That allows the Vegas and/or DVDA installation kit to re-install it completely.

Life is good again.

This solution (as well as many others in the forums, I'm sure) REALLY needs to be added to the Knowledge Base.

Could have saved me an hour's worth of research and Add/Removing of programs.

Thanks for posting your results!

SP1 final is out and technet / corporate and volume clients can download it, it was released 2/4/08.

Speculation is that it comes to the rest of us animals very soon (this or next week)... so Sony should be very concerned if it breaks users that are already installed.

Sean

ps, I think this forum might be operating on vista sp1 based on it's recent performance.
