VP9 64 - sometime timeline wont accept anything

LarsHD wrote on 6/24/2009, 1:31 AM
Vegas Pro 9 64 bit
Vista 64 bit
8 gb ram / Q6600
Project set to1920x1080, 29.97 prog.
----------------------------------------------------

- Explorer window in Vegas Pro 9 - 64
- Dragging a clip from exporer down to the time line
- Seeing a circle with a diagonal line in. Nothing happens.
- Sometimes "unknown error - can't open file"

+ Exiting Vegas Pro
+ Relaunchin Vegas Pro.
+ Now the same file can be dragged from the exporer window to the time line and things work fine.

It appears it can happen with any file type; avi-files, mov-files, mxf-files etc.

A known bug? That VP9-64 seems to start up with a firm will never to accept anything at all and then when restarting it, it is normal again.

Anyone?

Works fine for me - XP64

Could this have to do with the fact that VP9 sometimes does not recognize some of the files in a reopened project, unless you restart VP9?

Same mechanism or reasons behind the "blindness"? (This is discussed in some other threads)...

Yes, this has been "inherited" from the 8.1 - let's hope it'll be fixed soon!

I experienced this yesterday in Vegas 9 64-bit. Open up project, but nothing shows in timeline. Seemed to happen less frequently in VP9 versus VP8.1 but also hope it gets fixed soon.

I'm running Vista 64 too on a Q6600. This may not help but I don't think it will hurt. Try this updated 64 bit codec. It's free. Since I installed this codec V9 has been running very very smooth for me as good as 8.0c ever did. I use a mix of media and I had problems like you that only closing and reopening V9 seemed to fix (although I didn't have your exact problem) .. NOW -- I'm fine and loving V9 ...

I'd be VERY cautious with installing such codex pack!
At least, create a restore point before you do...

BTW. The OP's problem has nothing to do with codex; I'd say it's the FileIOSurrogate thing.

Always good advice. I've had to use restore points at times in the past. Worked beautifully every time. I was using the previous version of the K-Lite 64 bit Codec pack which worked great on 8.0c. This is an update of that. I, like so many others, was wondering why things were more stable with 8.0c. My system is fairly plain vanilla. Nothing had changed in my system except installing V9. I ran this new Codec with all the default settings it comes with --- gave me a very good result ! But, I was not having the exact problem described above --- but having to close V9 and reopen it sounded familiar.

How is this "K-Lite" codec supposed to change things with uncompressed AVI and MXF files for instance? Or MOV file H.264 from a 5D2?

I'm hesitant to install things without knowing exactyl why.

I also think the problem I'm describing is a bug...

Also, I'm not too fond of various codec packages unless I really need them... On my new Vista 64 VP9 install I only have QT as the non-Sony codec. The rest is Vegas only and VP9-64 is generally running *very* good. I'm using uncompressed avi and MXF only here it feels good.

I wish I understood fully how a codec or lack of the correct one interacts with a given system and particular media. I just know from experience that very strange things happen with NLE's that very often get fixed when the "right" codec is installed. The K-Lite codec may not fix your problem. Long shot probably. It'll take a few minutes to find out. --

Wouldn't a bug be something others could reproduce? -- I'd try the same files on my system. Where can I download some raw files of these types? ..

I had a problem with 8.0c (still have it) where my system would not maximize 8.0c once it was minimized in Vista 64. But almost no one else had this problem. Just a few of us. I thought it was a bug. Still think so because no such problem in V9.

I've noticed a similar thing in V9 and V8 32bit. Very large MXF files will appear unwilling to load onto the T/L. However if I click on the file in the Explorer first and wait a while and then drag the file to the T/L all works.
I suspect Vegas wants to read the file and do it's thumbnail thing before it gets to the timeline.

I'd also suggest trying adding the file to the Project Media and then adding it from there to the T/L.

wow, maybe that's why i've never had problems with importing media! i didn't think you could drag and drop without importing media via the project media window......

I've experienced the same thing. I just close VP9 64 bit and reopen - it then sees the project just fine. Something I'm willing to deal with given what I can do in Vegas compared to the other Archaic NLE's out there...
