VV 3.0c, b138: crashes too often on my system + problem NVidia Quadro 2Pro

Hi all,

I started using Vegas Video 3.0c (build 138) for some time now and like it much more than other NLEs (I used Mediastudio before). Unfortunately, I'm experiencing occasional program crashes. As most other people claim Vegas to be extremely stable, I'm wondering if there's anything in my setup that I could correct - or if the problem is inside Vegas.

The crashes happen at random times and are not repeatable. The program is just immediately terminated, without any error message or similar. It's just gone. Another situation occuring in times is a freeze during import of a new clip, while the audio peaks are constructed inside trimmer window; it hangs at 0% and cannot be cancelled. The program controls remain responsive, but don't do anything anymore. I suspect a background thread is started and cannot be terminated by the main thread: if I try to stop the process using task manager, Vegas asks me if it should terminate the "background process" - but is unable to do so. The immediate program termination is more common though (about once an hour). The good point about this is that I can easily re-start Vegas, and fortunately it makes backup copies quite often, so I never lost much work. Still, it is annoying.

Furthermore, I'm experiencing a weird problem with my video card, an NVidia Quadro 2 Pro. Maybe there is a connection to the crashes I mentioned above, but I'm not sure. Whenever the preview window is displayed in reduced size, usually only the upper half of the picture is shown and updated, the lower half is a frozen, disturbed image, sometimes showing remaining parts from former clips. If I change preview qualities, the part of the image correctly displayed changes, but I hardly ever get a clean image. Sometimes the image does get clean, but quite rarely. If I let the preview show the image at "project size", the display is fine though (no matter if it is docked in or floating, but if docked in, I only see part of the whole image, of course). I'm experiencing a similar problem in MediaStudio itself though, but there I can prevent it by changing the preview window size slightly. It seems the driver can't display certain preview sizes. So, I don't think this problem is related to my crashes - still, if anybody knows a solution...

This is my setup:
P IV, 2.4GHz, 133MHz FSB, running at 2.4GHz (no overclocking)
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-8PE667 Ultra. AGP Aperture is on 128MB. BIOS F2.
Memory: 512MB DDR-333 CL2 (Corsair XMS-2700)
OS: Windows XP Pro, SP1
VGA: NVidia Quadro 2 Pro - same behaviour with original XP Pro drivers, as well as with Detonator 40.72 and the Quadro-certified NVidia-Quadro-specific drivers 29.80.
Harddisk: 1x120GB WD as main drive,
2xDiamondMax+ 60GB in a RAID0 stripe
PCI-cards: Pinnacle DC10+ (slot 3, dedicated IRQ), Firewire, Pinnacle Studio PCTV Rave

Thanks for any ideas!
