VV cannot render ASF files

I can render VV 2.0d projects to WMV and WMA formats, but not to ASF. I keep getting this message:

"An error occurred while creating the media file tutorial.asf. No compatible video codec was found."

Can I download the codec from Microsoft, or are ASF files becoming obsolete anyway?

I'm on Win98SE, 733MHz, 256MB RAM.

Per Microsoft, .asf has been replaced by WMV/WMV

I still render to ASF files exclusively. This is to maintain compatability with Media Player 6.4. My delivery platform is CDROM so there is no guarantee that users will be connected to the net for media player to auto-download codecs.

Media Player 7+ doesn't install on Windows NT4 or Windows 95 and I can't exclude those users. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, I have to stick with .asf files for now.

If re-installing Vegas and Media Player 6.4 doesn't solve your problem, then I'm not sure what to do. In my set-up, it's easy for me to re-install Win2k whenever something weird happens.
