VV manual from eBooks

Tried to buy the VV manual from eBooks but couldn't bring myself to do it. No problem forking over the 35 bucks for it, but they only accept orders via their website - and even while having Alex on the phone (yes, I spent my nickle for a call to place the order), he declined to accept an order other than through his web site. Why do I have a problem with this? They want my e-mail address - for future spam no doubt. So, Sound Forge, is this the only way you folks do business?

You might consider having a copy-center print the PDF...

(about 40 bucks as I recall)

Or you can download the PDF file from the SoFo site and print it out yourself. That's what I did, on a color printer, and bound it myself with a spiral binding. I happen to have one of those machines. <wink>. Doing it yourself is a major project, and you won't really save any money, but you can do it yourself too.

I think you're a little paranoid worrying about someone asking for your email address if you are willing to give them your credit card number, seems rather silly.

Why do online merchants ask for your email? Well I use to run such a business. The reason is simple. If there is a problem with your credit card, they want a simple means to get in touch with you. You would be surprised how many bogus refusals credit cards generate.

I got mine from ebooks a while back and it is good quality, but I wish I had just done the download of the PDF, printed, holepunched and put it in a cheap binder myself. The ebooks one I got, as it turned out, was not as current as the PDF version on the SF site. If you get it from ebooks, ask them what the revision date is.

John Beech, if you're that worried about future spam, then you should create a "throw-away" eMail account and use that in the situations you're worrying about. mail.yahoo.com and hotmail.msn.com both over good free eMail accounts. If that account starts brimming over with spam then abandon it.

I have a fantastic advantage by running my own email server. If i plan to do business with a place named "Elbow", i'll create an elbow@chienworks.com email address which aliases my normal inbox. If that address starts generating spam i simply disable it. I also would know it was Elbow who was responsible for spreading my address around

Very interesting, Chienworks, as always.

Anyone want to second the motion that SF UPDATE the 2 CD-ROM Tutorial? VV2 is long gone.

In the end I decided I was not going to foolishly cut off my nose to spite my face and gave them a throwaway hotmail account - but it will 'suck' if the nmanual isn't the latest revision . . . else why use somebody like this in the first place?

In any case, I don't think the revision will be an issue or it would reflect poorly on SoFo for pointing us to them in the first place. Time will tell. They claim to ship within a couple of days of ordering so I'll see soon enough. As for the CD set, I didn't know about it - is it useful only with VV2, or is it worthwhile anyway?

I've got no problem spending money on educational sources, I of course am checking in here more frequently, and I thank all of you who take of your time to point me in the right direction.

if they still have the 2 cd-roms (even if it is vv2) and you are just starting, it will be very , very helpful

John,

I think the revision may be an issue. At least it is for me. I downloaded the SoFo PDF over two months ago, and yet that download file, dated 11/19/01, is possibly more up-to-date than the eBooks version from a couple of weeks ago. At least, my original download had more pages. There is no good reason why the eBooks version shouldn't be up-to-date, since eBooks ostensibly doesn't print your book until after they get your order. Possibly eBooks doesn't, or didn't, have the latest version of the PDF file. But you would think they would update that thing daily. After all, it is "eBooks".

> "They claim to ship within a couple of days of ordering so I'll see soon enough." <

They did ship mine promptly, probably within one day or maybe two. But the eBooks version is in plain black and white (except for the front and back cover), while the actual manual is in full color. If I had known that, I wouldn't have bought it. I would have printed it out on my Epson Stylus Photo inkjet printer, which does beautiful color printing (slowly.) However, printing my own color version would have cost me more, considering the cost of ink and paper. But my manual would have looked 1000% better (even on the black and white text). I would probably have hole punched it for a 3-ring binder, although I could have had it wirebound at Kinkos.

In defense of eBooks, there is no way you could custom print a full color 363-page 8.5x11 book for $29.95.
