VV: Trying to freeze frame: Jitter on external monitor or DV tape

tedbuchanan wrote on 9/22/2000, 6:30 PM
I beg for anyone's help or response as to whether you can
duplicate this problem.

I set an event's velocity envelope to 0 to get a freeze
frame about 4 seconds long. On external monitor, (also on
DV tape after printing to tape) I get a lot of jitter. If I
turn on "RESAMPLE" in the event properties, jitter stops.
However, if I render, even if I turn on "RESAMPLE THE FRAME
RATE of ALL VIDEO" in custom settings, the jitter returns
when I play the rendered avi file to an external monitor.

The VV manual says on page 282:
"The Resample option in the media properties dialog and on
the Project tab in the Custom Settings dialog during the
final render both perform the same function."
I presume the manual must mean the EVENT properties
dialogue and not the media properties dialogue, because
there is no RESAMPLE in the Media properties.

Anyway, does anyone have the same problem, or know
why "resample" eliminates jitter as an event property, but
not as a custom rendor setting. BTW, the freeze frame works
okay if the original scene didn't have any quick motion in
it.

I have Pyro Firewire, Pentium III-700, 300+MB memory, Abit
BE6-2 mobo, SB Live soundcard, Adaptec 3950 U2 SCSI,
Cheetah drives, IDE ultra-66 system drive, VideoBlaster TNT
PCI video card.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Hi Barbara - I don't think I'm going to be much help but I did
experience the same thing as you with jitter using the velocity
envelope. I was trying to slow down a high motion "drive-by" and it
looked good on the computer but jittery on the TV and DV tape. One
thing I did notice was when you are paused on a frame and output to
external monitor, you can get a stable picture if you add the
Broadcast color filter to the track. I don't know why and I never
tried rendering with this turned on but it's worth a shot.

sorry I can't be of more help!

Charles,
I appreciate your answer. The Broadcast Color Filter did stop the
jitter, as long as I preview at a size LESS than the project size of
720x480. If I preview at 720x480 (project size) and "Best" or print
to tape (DV), the jitter returns. It seems like some kind of problem
with the interlacing of fields when the project is set to 720x480.
What kind of DV card do you have? I'll gladly buy a new one to get
around this problem.

Just to review, I set velocity envelope to 0 on an event in time line
to freeze the first frame of the event. It freezes only if there was
no action around the time of the shot; it also freezes if I use
broadcast colors and set preview to less than 720x480.

In case this topic was never resolved. I have had similar problems and I too wondered if it was due to the interlacing of the rendered video. So I tried rendering the project in a progressive format instead of interlaced and the problem went away. Maybe this will help.
