VV3 and HuffYUV editing problems - a software bug?

haraldpz wrote on 12/12/2001, 1:36 PM
I tried to address my problem buried in another thread, but I did not get any response that would have resolved my problem. It sees to me that the suggested solution would pertain to capture but not to editing.
So here is a more detailed description.

When I load a avi file that was compressed with HuffYUV I have viewing problems:

- No proper thumbnail display in the timeline (only fuzzy picture)
- No proper picture display when playing from the timeline (only fuzzy picture)
- No thumnail display in the trimmer (only fuzzy picture)

BUT, proper picture display when playing from the trimmer!!!

I hope somebody has a solution, or mabybe Sonic Foundry is working on one...?

Sorry, Huffy codec is not supported in Vegas. You might be able to get it to work, but we do not test with it, and we make no guarantees.

I'm wondering why everybody thinks this codec is so great- how exactly is it better than .avi using our new DV codec? Yes, I've read the Berkely paper-

Dave (SonicEPM)

It is lossless!!! I know, only 2:1 compression but many of us still are using analog devices for caputure and the Huffman encoder works well with the 4:2:2 YUV format the the brooktree chipsets use for native analog capture. Stupid question here but can you capture analog via the VV3 capture utility AND use the new codec? I believe you cannot. I certainly am up for trying it.

Ron

If you could only tell me where this switch is hiding...

I think it is only available during capture (have not tried capture, so I am not sure), at least I could not find it in the editor.

What a pity ;(
I hope somebody at Sonic Foundry wakes up and adds support.
RonC explained it very well why HuffYUV is so important.
There are many people out there that have analog equipment and want to go NLE. And many more that have switched to digital but have tons of analog tapes that need to be converted.
In either case, capturing Hi8 as YUY2 with HuffYUV compression is lossless (!!!!!) and thus preserves high quality while saving some disk space. I can do all my editing at the high quality level w/o any loss. Only when all the editing is done do I have to decide which final format I want to render in. At that stage I can create the final file depending on the use: analog video, didgital video, CD, DVD, Internet, etc. Each has its own format, but all are created from the same high quality HuffYUV original. If I'd render immediately from analog into DV I'd already have a quality loss at that stage. Each consecutive stage into all the other formats for the final products would create much worse final qualities.

So please, don't leave an important market segment hanging in thin air....

Ok, here it goes:
First, bring up the Device Manager, (in W2K, right click My Computer, then Properties, click the Hardware tab, click Device Manager).
Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" tree and right-click "Video Codecs" and click Properties. Click the "Properties" tab. A list of all codecs should appear. Right click the Huffyuv lossless codec and select Properties. Click the settings button and you will see the configuration options. Check the "Always suggest RGB format for output" checkbox.

If there's an easier way, someone please post it.

I discovered the "request RGB" switch for capture early on (which you can usually set whenever choosing codecs in the output section of any video program -- usually the "Properties" button), but alas I have footage already in the box. It occurred to me that I can just run that footage *back* through Virtualdub and using the switch setting for the dub.

Of course this occurred to me after I got home this evening, but if any night owls want to try it....

I finally figured out where this switch is and it worked, although I don't understand why, as it is found in the output settings :)

The problem manifests itself when loading the HuffYUV file, but the switch is under

File > Render as > Custom > Video Format: HuffYUV > Configure > "Always suggest RGB format for output"

After Ok'ing that HuffYUV setting one can cancel out of the whole render process and the thumbnails and preview pictures are there !!!
