VV3 Capture dislikes Canon cameras?? HELP?!?!

Arks wrote on 12/11/2001, 10:01 PM
I have the following system:

P4 1.5 w/ 256 MB RAM, 20 GB HD, 100 GB HD(for capture)
both Hds are WD's, and I am using the Pyro Firewire card for capture.

I keep getting droppped frames every so often, and major lag in the video capture program itself, when I try to use the Canon ZR10. The lag is in effect only with the camera plugged into the firewire port. I thought it may have been a camera specific problem, but my friend brought his GL1 over, and it did the same thing. The lag was still there, and dropped frames occured once in awhile. Now i was getting lost... Maybe its the MiniDV tapes?? I am not sure, but all I know is my older Sony D8 works fine. Captured 6 sixty minute tapes with no dropped frames at all... oh, and the program does not lag for the sony either... anyone have any similar problems, or am I a rare case? Can anyone help me out??? thanks in advance.

open your VV3 capture ... under preference CAPTURE put a CHECK in "capture start delay "then put in how many many seconds you want the delay before it starts recording (0-10 sec)

if you use batch capture ..then uder preference ADVANCED CAPTURE check the pre-roll and put in 5 sec.
also check the box "enable dv start frame verification.."

when using CAPTURE you might get 1 or 2 drop frame ( only at start ) if you have the delay set at 0 ...

using batch capture if you have a 0 pre-roll you might get 1 or 2 dropped frames ( only on the start)

using GL, elura , panasonic dv 2000 deck .they all work

I had a similar problem, but it happened using both my Canon Ultura and Dazzle DV bridge. The capture application itself seemed to keep freezing every few seconds and I got dropped frames. I upgraded to DirectX 8.1 and my issue was resolved. You may want to try that.

I think I have 8.1... i'll double check. I'll also try those steps as well, next time I get the camera... right now im anti-canon. lol.

You don't need to be anti-Canon, but the ZR10 is the cheapest DV camera they make and behaves accordingly. Pricier Canon DV cameras, like the Elura, GL1, XL-1 etc
work much better- we use them all the time here at SF.

I use a ZR10 at this OHCI station too, primarily *because* it's a cheap camera, and so far very compatible with the Pyro and every NLE I've tried. I'm not about to tie up an XL1 for OHCI editing. Premiere has a specific template for it (and other cams), maybe VV needs that too.

I've only captured a couple hours so far, and have had dropped frames reported by the summary window even though the window behind it clearly says '0 dropped frames' so I dunno what's happening. Some slight lag but nothing I would have commented on myself.

I've replied to a similar post here recently.

You should be able to use any DV device with Video Capture We don't use any templates for particular devices as they should all follow the same 1394 device control standard.

That said, we've seen with non-Sony devices (JVC and Canon) that the transport communication is not as responsive as it could be. You may notice a little lag in the timecode updating every now and then when playing the device or capturing from it. We have successfully performed various batch capture tests on JVCs and Canons.

Also, we've had reports that when capturing with the ZR-10 that you need to use the Capture start delay Capture preference, otherwise you may not get a both the audio and video properly captured. I believe this is in the Known Issues in the release notes.

Yeh, I know the Zr10 is the cheapest of the family. I mentioned that I tried the GL1 as well, and it had the same effects. BUT, I did not try a complete tape capture w/ the GL1 and it captured fine. The lag on the controls jsut got a little bit annoying, and being a "fix it" type a guy, I decided to complain since I couldnt figure it out, thats all =)

Are you able to batch capture properly? There are some other posts here with Canons that can't.

I have yet to try that w/ the canon. When I do, I will let you know the results.

I am interested in hearing the outcome of this. I am strongly considering VV3 as my new NLE but I have a Canon Elura. I must back off if VV3 is unstable with Canon camcorders or vice versus. Hopefully there's a solution to this capture problem, because VV3 does look like a nice program.
