VV3 Capture "unusable" AFTER using XP MovieMaker

Arcadian wrote on 5/26/2002, 11:45 AM
Very fascinating, VV3 capture worked perfectly for my Canon ZR45 through my Adeptec Fireconnect card on my Windows XP Pro system. However, when trying to capture analog video through the ZR45's AV/DV pass-through, the VV3 capture console choked. It would display a fraction of a second of video, then insists that a tape be inserted...resulting in NO capturing ability.

Enter Microsoft's built-in MovieMaker and Capture Software, which ALLOWED me to capture my AV/DV pass-through from my Canon ZR45 in DV format. This may solve problems of users not being able to capture the raw DV feed from AV/DV devices.

Final Dilemma: Now when returning to pure DV capture from my Canon ZR45, I would prefer to use the VV3 capture console to take advantage of VV3 DV codec. However, what used to be a flawless process, is now impossible. The VV3 interface begins, and when selecting "capture video," a warning pops up:
[The device "No Capture Device" could not be opened. Please make sure that it s turned on and is not being used by another application.]

Then, the VV3 Capture interface starts, followed by another warning:
[The device "No Microsoft DV Camera and VCR" could not be opened. Please make sure that it s turned on and is not being used by another application.]

Has Microsoft MovieMaker usurped the control of the DV device drivers? I've tried everything, reboot, repeated power cycling of camera with cycling of VV3 to NO AVAIL. I have also NOT selected "Always use this process" when a new device connects itself to the computer. Options that are presented in this "new connection" interface of Windows XP Pro are: Capture using MovieMaker, Capture using VegasVideo, or Take No Action. I have tried all combinations. VV3 Capture is now unusable, as it cannot see the connected device anymore since I used MovieMaker to capture some AV/DV pass-through. Please help, or at least, begin examining this "bug."

thanks,
Arcadian

I don't have a solution to the new problem, perhaps DeeF will. However, the first problem of pass-through capture may be solved by turned off DV device control in VidCap (Options, Preferences, turn off 'Enable DV device control').

Right you are Dennis, disabling DV device control will allow this type of pass-thru capture.

In terms of your other XP issue, when connected and turned on, the DV device should show up in Device Manager under Imaging Devices. In Video Capture, the device should show up on the Video menu as "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR".

Also, you shouldn't be running Windows Movie Maker when running Video Capture.

I'll jump in since I too have a Canon ZR45 and use XP. This method works for me.

Start the VV3 capture software. You should see 'Please connect a device' in white text on a dark blue background. Turn on camera in VCR mode. If you don't have the firewire cable in, plug it in now. In a second or two Windows should give a audible cue and bring up the Digital Device Window. Dismiss it by clicking on the take no action choice. You should see the verify tape name window. Click one of the capature options and away you go. If the capture tab is still grayed out, remove and re insert the firewire cable at either the computer or camera end.

Thank you all for replying so quickly! Memorial Day weekend? I figured on waiting until Tuesday at best!

Let me start off by saying… “---sigh--- I think there is a deeper problem here. ya know, the regedit kind...”

I tried to be exhaustive in my earlier description, but the problem is that I cannot capture video with VV3 anymore. I used to be able to. Now I am at the mercy of Microsoft MovieMaker.

Let me respond to all of your comments:
>SonicDennis: disabling DV device control in VidCap was my one of my early suspicions, but to no avail, it still didn’t let me capture the raw stream (not DV tape, AV/DV pass-through). I did try both enable/disable before my latter problems, and it did not help. However, I cannot reproduce those scenarios at this time because I can not even get VV3 Capture to recognize DV device at all since my use of MovieMaker.

>deef: Yes, it should allow pass-through, but it didn’t for me for some reason. (see above) Again, YES to the device IS showing up in the device manager as Canon DV under Imaging Devices as well as being the only option "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR" under the video menu of Video Capture. Obviously, I would not run both MovieMaker and VV3 at the same time. (more below)

>BillyBoy: Thank you for your experience. Although it doesn't address my problem exactly, I can use your example as a means of describing my dilemma further.

1. Camera turned off and fire wire disconnected. Launch VV3 and select Capture video.
Result: WarningPrompt: Sonic Foundry Video Capture window: [The device ‘No Capture Device’ could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on it and is not being used by another application or user.]
2. Select “OK”
Result: The sonic foundry video capture 3.0 interface appears with same Warning Prompt: [The device ‘No Capture Device’ could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on it and is not being used by another application or user.]
3. Select “OK”
Result: 'Grayed out' Sonic Foundry Video Capture interface with in message “Please Connect a Device “
4. Connect Canon DV Camera/Firewire:
Result: Digital Video Device dialogue box appears with: 'Record video using windows movie maker', 'Capture digital video using sonic foundry Vegas 3.0', or 'Take no action.' At the same time a small alert box appears with the Sonic Foundry Video Capture logo and ‘Microsoft DV camera and VCR’ lasting only one second. Immediately replaced by a warning prompt: Sonic Foundry Video Capture window: [The device ‘No Capture Device’ could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on it and is not being used by another application or user.]

5. After Selecting “OK” again:
A similar warning appears: [The device ‘Microsoft DV Camera and VCR’ could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on it and is not being used by another application or user.]

End of story…

Comments:
>BillyBoy: I urge you to try to capture AV/DV through your ZR45 pass-through using the VV3 interface (just to see if you can!) let me know you results. (remember to select AV/DV OUT = ON in your Canon ZR 45 VCR SET UP menu) Secondly, I cannot recommend trying Microsoft Moviemaker for capture, as you may befall the same hardship I have.

>deef, SonicDennis: I don’t get paid enough to do QA (on Memorial Day weekend), but you may want to try to reproduce this one. I have eagerly taken you advice, but it doesn’t quite answer the question I am asking. I have tried connecting camera first, firewire first, starting capture software first, reconnect to current device, and device control combinations...you name it. SOMETHING got changed once I used the Microsoft MovieMaker Capture in XP Pro, because remember, it all worked fine before that point. Interestingly, MovieMaker DOES (when I try it) have device control over my camera. The suspicious part is: when connecting my camera, I get a brief acknowledgement through the SF pop-up that the DV device has connected to the SF Capture software, if but only for a single second, to be replaced by a warning message: [The device ‘Microsoft DV Camera and VCR’ could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on it and is not being used by another application or user.] (yep, tried reboot, looked for open processes, nuttin')

No Dice.

So does it work ok with Movie Maker?

Uninstall/reinstall VV3?
BillyBoy wrote on 5/30/2002, 3:15 PM
I haven't had a chance to try the A to D converter feature yet of the ZR-45, but I took a gamble and tried to capture with XP's built-in Movie Maker and it worked alright and didn't mess up the Vegas Video Capture. I can do either.
