VV3 Newbie Question regarding capturing.

Just recently upgraded to Vegas Video 3 from version 2. Only used version two for audio recording. Now I want to get into the video end of things.

My system:

Dell Precision Workstation 420 -
Pentium III 733
512 MB DDRAM
2 Hard Drives (set to Ultra DMA type 2 mode) both 7200 RPM (The "C" drive for programs, the "D" drive for audio/video)
Windows XP Pro
Vegas Video 3
Texas Insturment OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 card (that came with Dell computer)

Here are my questions:

1) Are the current Dell supplied hard drives, both being 7200 RPM and set to "Ultra DMA" mode adequate for reliable video capture and editing? (I use this configuration for audio recording with very reliable results.)

2) Is the Dell supplied IEEE 1394 card adequate to use as the capturing board for digital transfers from a digital camera?

I hope to purchase Canon's GL2 Digital Video camera. It has Digital Video transfer capabilities to a computer via the IEEE 1394.

3) Any known problems (or strengths) with Digital Video Data transfer from Canon's GL2 utilizing the Vegas Video 3 video capture program?

4) Will digital data transfers from the GL2 effectively work with my current computer set up and VV3?

5) If I need to purchase a more reliable IEEE 1394 based digital capture device, what would you recommend?

Thank you for your time and thoughtful suggestions! :)

Yes - they should be fine.

2) Is the Dell supplied IEEE 1394 card adequate to use as the capturing board for digital transfers from a digital camera?

Yes - the Dell supplied card is compliant.

3) Any known problems (or strengths) with Digital Video Data transfer from Canon's GL2 utilizing the Vegas Video 3 video capture program?

No problems with the XL-1 - would assume the same with the GL-2.

4) Will digital data transfers from the GL2 effectively work with my current computer set up and VV3?

Yes it should be fine.

5) If I need to purchase a more reliable IEEE 1394 based digital capture device, what would you recommend?

Good 1394 cards are any Pyro or SIIG.

I am currently working on a Dell PIII 750 MHz with no problems capturing or printing.

GREAT!!! Thanks for answering the questions ! :)

After I posted this set of questions, I found more information regarding hardward specifications buried within Sonic Foundry's web page on VV 3! Way cool!

Plan on purchasing the GL2 within the next few weeks. Also will probably purchase a more up to date IEEE 1394 card too.

I've starting tootling around with the VV 3 using short video clips and photos from my cheapo digital camera. Heck, I'm having fun using just those items! Love the ability to sync music up to the video too. Everything seems to be working just fine! (Just haven't had to use the video capture function yet because I don't currently own a digital video camera. . .) I can't tell you how long I've been dreaming of doing this.

Merry Holidays, folks. . . . Santa is bringing this home a GL2! :)

Cheers! :)
