are you using .PNG format? transparency works best with PNG files.

1 - create a new file with a transparent canvas.
2 - use a brush and paint something, or create some text
3 - save as type... Portable Network Graphic
call it test.png
4 - drop some video on the VV timeline
5 - insert a new video track above your first track
6 - drop the test.png image on the new track

you should see your video playing behind your text/scribble PNG image.

Hi-

Thanks for your reply. I have used .psd, .png, .tga, .tif. No transparency in any for VV3, however, they do work in Premiere and PhotoShop.

It looks to me like VV3 is not "seeing" the layers. And yes, I have premultiplied selected. Actually, VV3 does set the alpha images to premultiplied, it just does not make the background transparent, it uses white.

VV3 does recognize Alphas created by PhotoShop.

Weird.

Anyway, I would still like to know if there are any Paint Shop Pro users who have been successful in using Alpha Channel on VV3.

Thank you.

I had been having the same trouble with PSP, and when I followed your instructions, Ben, I still got a white background.

However, I played around a bit, and found if I made a selection of the "foreground" material - say text or a shape, then clicked Selection > Save to alpha channel, the resulting .png worked ok - the background was transparent!

that's strange... you are absolutely sure your original PSP canvas is transparent and not white? (it should have a checkerboard pattern)

i don't know what else to try... if we're doing exactly the same thing with the same software, i'd expect the same results.

Hi Ben-

I am still on PSP 6. I downloaded 7 demo and that did not work.

My workaround is to open a psp image in Photoshop LE then just save it and it then works in VV3.

I wrote to both JASC and Sonic Foundry. I heard from JASC who said they would look in to it, and Sonic Foundry never bothered to reply at all.

I am not holding my breath.

As I said before, PSP transparencies work with every other program.

Version 7 works just fine with .png files. With .psd files you have select the foreground items and save as Alpha channel. Both work fine with VV.

I'm using PSP7.02, and definitely starting with the transparent (chequerboard) background.
Maybe there's a setting somewhere that does the alpha thing by default on yours, whereas I have to save selection as Alpha.

Anyway, I'm relieved that it works.

Hi kkolbo-

You are correct .png does work in PSP 7. I guess I didn't try that format when testing.

Still, something screwy in the Alpha Channels with either PSP or VV3.

Time to upgrade to PSP 7 though!

Thank you.
