VV3 - Print To Tape dropping frames using 1394, Panasonic DV300, At wits end.

maddawgdewey wrote on 11/29/2001, 10:46 AM
Problem: Using Windows 98 SE, Print to tape is dropping video and audio frames.
I have tried everything! Including:
- Verified my (dedicated to video) Western Digital Hard Drive is 7200 RPM's.
- IRQ slot is dedicated to the 1394.
- All programs are stopped from computer while attempting.
- Downloaded all the latest drivers and enhancements for 1394, Windows 98 SE, and everything else I could fathom.
- Called Sonic, and tried every suggestion.
- Defragged the hard drive.
- Don't have this problem using Ulead Video Studio, but their interface is horrible.
- I can create the AVI file on the VV3 then open it in Ulead but the sound to the camera is ticking. Is it possible to create the video on VV3, burn it on a CD and then put that on my camera?

VV3 interface is totally awesome but totally useless unless I can get a clear copy of my creation to my digital camera. Please, anyone, send me some suggestions to try to get this thing to work. I've logged so many hours on this problem that my family doesn't recognize me anymore.

please go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System tools>System info>Hardware resources>Irqs and generate an irq list. Save that to a text file then copy paste that info here, in this thread. I am almost certain the problem is irq related.

First make sure that all of your power management features are off. Especially the monitor, it should stay on.

Second, make sure auto-detect is off on all CD and DVD drives. If Windows is polling the drives that can cause the glitch.

Finally, depending on the speed of your video hard drive, you might want to make sure it is the secondary master and not slave.

Hope this helps. I'm actually a MS Pro 6.5 user. I'm trying to get some info on Vegas Audio but my post is losing ground fast!

Thank you for responding so quickly. My 1394 is in IRQ 09. I have to disable the VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controllers to get the 1394 in a slot of it's own with only holders for IRQ Steering. (still the audio and frames are dropping - choppy - skipping when output to the camera.) Input from the camera is very smooth. After 3 days of this I know more about IRQ's and Bios then I ever wanted to know. If you have any suggestions at all it would be SOOOOO appreciated.

Mark,
Thank you for your suggestions.

Power Schemes = System Stand by = Never, Turn off Monitor = Never, Turn off hard disk = Never

Disc Detector = disabled

Hard Disk is Secondary IDE Controller

Still no luck, print to tape video is choppy - blue screen, stuttering, skipping and so frustrating. Any thing else I can try?
Thanks
Carrie

Hello. I am very new to VV 3.0 and video in gemeral. Your problem sounds similar to mine.
I was told to check to see if my hard drive was running in DMA mode. Hubby checked the CMoss and it was...

When he went to check the IRQs he noticed that the hard drive itself was not in DMA mode.

A new Sony DVMC-DA2 (to fix dropped frames) and a click of a button to fix gray blocks sloved my problems.

Hope it helps...

The IRQ layout looks reasonable, so next I would confirm that you have DMA enabled for all IDE drives (this is critical). If that doesn't work, make sure all VIA drivers are updated- some VIAs had 1394 problems early on, but I believe the latest drivers fixed the problems.

I have exactly the same scenerio with my PC. It is a P3 500 MHZ with 768MB ram, and my video capture drive is a SCSI 7200 rpm drive. I will render a project and it will play fine on the PC. When I dump it to my sony TRV-900 mini-dv camcorder, it may or may not get through the project without either dropping video frames or audio. I have to keep retrying till I can get it. This also happens when I try to dump it to my JVC dual deck (mini-dv and VHS). I also have found that Ulead will copy out with no problem. I would also like to know what is going on. I have no IRQ conflicts either.

have you tried printning to any other DV devices? it seems suspect that you can capture smoothly, but cannot print to tape smoothly. that would suggest that the problem is not your system.

i noticed you have 2 com ports enabled and sharing IRQs. i've never seem com ports share an IRq before. if you aren't using them, you should disable them (or at least one of them) in your BIOS. (careful though... one of them might be for your modem)

you could also install another copy of windows on a different partition and see if a fresh install is all you needed.

From:
My Computer>Properties> Device Manager> Disk Drives> Settings
Both of my hard drives show DMA enabled. Is there another way to verify this is correct?

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by verifying the Drivers of the VIA. Are these drivers for my Western Digital Hard Drives? I've researched the Western Digital web site and they don't show any updates or downloads for hard drives. Please advise - thank you.

Unfortunately I have no other DV devices to try. So you think maybe it's my camera? I would agree with you except that when I use Ulead Video the video and audio are displayed nicely on the camera. This is happening with VV3 and I've also tried Studio DV made by Pinnacle.

I've messed with all of my COM ports while trying to free up an IRQ and even turned all of them off and attempted the VV3 again. So I've been without the modem for awhile, still No luck.

I will try anything to get this working. Not sure about partitioning and installing new Windows without super user around. Thanks

My device manager shows my DMA is enabled, is there another way to verify this? Thanks

Please check out this print to tape FAQ which also applies to capturing:

Problem solved!! Well after spending every hour of an entire week on the problem (and really messing the computer up to the point it would rarely boot) - it is
solved!!!! Last night my husband spent ONLY two hours fixing it. He moved the 1394 card to the second slot above all other cards then using the KT7A-Raid users manual reconfigured the BIOS for optimal settings. Works like a dream, video and audio (from SBLive) couldn't be better.

This will be especially important for anyone who introduces their 1394 card to an existing computer.

Special thanks to Bill Briare AKA Decrink who pointed us in the right direction of looking into the Abit motherboard. Thanks to Sonic forum members for forcing me to learn all about BIOS and IRQ's.

Ok ok...........

I had the same problem dropping frames.

I went through all the postings from 1 to 57. I have a 1.4 AMD on an ASUS A7M266 board running 1/2 gig of kingston DDR ram, 28 gigs of free space, Geforce 2 video card (TI chipset)saying that... MY PROBLEM was solved by DMA settings.

Adobe sucks compared to Vegas Video!!! Congrats to the ladies and gents at SONIC!! Have a wonderful chritmas SONIC and fellow addicts of vegas video.

Thank you!!!!
