vv3: Record to tape: interruptions in signal- results useless

(Hello, i originally tacked this on my other thread (the rsDvCap one), but i think no one saw it. Im still unable to solve the following- please pass on any advice that may occur to you, thanks!!!)

Hello again- well, i learned my lessons, and got a demo of vv3 to play with, and yes, the capture section is much easier to deal with than the silly RsDvCap ever was. And, i rendered to NTSC DV format avi, thanks for the heads up there. And, its **almost** working now.. the camera is recording the avi to tape without trouble...

EXCEPT that i cant avoid getting dropped out frames about every 6 seconds, like the file cant make it to the camera consistently. You see a second of the black screen with the sonic foundry logo, then it goes back to printing... and yes it prints the drop out to tape. bah.

So, i went thru the help menus and discovered the options --> properties --> print to tape menu, and adjusted the delay time, up to its max of 20,000 miliseconds (thats 20 seconds?) (i didnt want to take any chances) ...i figured the bigger buffer the better...

and: it definately helped, but its still has frequent breif interruptions, and that of course still yields a useless product at the end of the day. i feel like i need like a 40 second delay, but its not available..or is it???

Any suggestions on how to improve the signal flow via the firewire? am i having a common problem here?

i have tried rendering at "draft" quality as well, just to see if that made a difference, and the same thing happened to that clip too.

one note is that when the automatic fan kicks in on my laptop, it really wreaks havoc. it has a history of sort of pausing operations (in any application) for a moment while it turns itself on...(this is a dell latitude running windows ME) perhaps theres a setting somewhere to disable the automatic fan thing? (at this point id risk overheating just to get this project in the can!)...but even when the fan is dormant, the stuttering still happens in print to tape. or perhaps theres some sort of system-wide buffer i can tweak?

thanks for the advice so far, im so close i can taste it!!

Uhm.. maybe I'm missing something. But if you are using the Demo of Vegas Video 3.0 (and not a purchased copy), then the behaviour you mention here is intentional:

"EXCEPT that i cant avoid getting dropped out frames about every 6 seconds, like the file cant make it to the camera consistently. You see a second of the black screen with the sonic foundry logo, then it goes back to printing... and yes it prints the drop out to tape. bah."

The insertion of the Sonic Foundry logo every 6 seconds or so is to keep people from using our Demo software to do real work. If these are the only 'interruptions' you are seeing, then the software is working as expected.

However, if you are seeing the SF logo being inserted on a purchased copy of Vegas Video, then please contact our technical support to get the software activated properly.

Hi Curt- This revelation (the demo version having built in interruptions) finally occurred to me a little while ago, when in desperation, i reviewed the rendered file in Windows media player and saw the interruptions...(and wow, i thought i was REALLY going batty there for a minute, ha ha).

The sad thing is that in the meantime, i downloaded Scenalyzer Live to see if it would work better than RsDvCap (yes) and possibly even vegas capture (ill never know because...) now my project file will ONLY open in VV3, not my VV2! so in other words, even though i have had VV2 over a year, i must now purchase VV3, possibly unecessarily, in order to finish my project. If you have any tips as to how to get my project to open in VV2 again (ive tried uninstalling VV3, it doesnt help) let me know. because if scenalyzer works to pump it out to DV (where RsDvCap failed), then i never needed to go to VV3 in the first place..(though i would indeed like to step up to the rich flavor of VV3 just on general principles!)...its just VERY frustrating to feel "forced to buy" when i havent truly explored the possibilities in VV2, which ive been in love with for a long time.

thanks!

You should NEVER do "real" work using a Demo!
