VV3, & studio dv ?

KPITRL wrote on 6/21/2002, 9:54 AM
HI!, Is there anyone out there using studio dv7
on the same system w/vv3.

The reason I'm asking is, some time ago, I was using
a different editor on my computer before I was introduced
to vegas.

I then added an earlier version of studio dv to
my system along w/ the editor that I was using, and
studio dv seemed to kinda take over.

My preview window became smaller in the editor opposite
of stu. dv., and I'd try to open a file with one, but the
other would open.

My real question is, can VV3, & studio dv7 run on the
same computer without conflicts.

I remember reading in an earlier thread that you may have
to disable stu. dv's codecs, or somthing.

If true, how is that done?

thanks in advance!

Ps. sorry for the long winded thead.

I too have both installed on my computer again running on XP, with no apparent problems.
(I must admit that Studio 7 is redundant , because VV3 covers all my needs)

I used to run Studio DV because I had little success and even less confidence in the Vegas capture/print function. Since the release of Vidcap2.5 (which was followed by the release of 3.0) SF have made a believer out of me. I no longer have a need for the Studio product. To be sure, the Hollywood FX package (which was packaged with my purchase) included some nice FX, but I find that the Studio product's codecs are somewhat insidious and persist in monopolizing VV. To be fully honest, I have not tried Studio since installing VV3.0, and I know that VV30 includes the provision to ignore third party codecs, so, perhaps the coexistence of these two programs is not a problem of the same magnitude as it once was.

It used to be that, no matter what codec you tried to use in VV, if the Pinnacle product was installed on your system, everything you captured or rendered reported out as using the miro'whatever' codec. Used to annoy the heck out of me. That's why I purged my system of all things Pinnacle as soon as SF offered a capture/print function that I could rely upon.

While the Pinnacle product is a capable one, to be sure, I don't find it to be in the same league as VV with its unlimited number of tracks (both audio and video), very intuitive interface (Pinnacle requires mouse intervention to access many of its annoying pop-up work areas), and, for my use, is much faster and more efficient.

Each to his/her own, however, and Pinnacle is a well-respected, innovative company.

Sorry to ramble, but, that's my take.

You can tell VV3 to ignore 3rd party codecs in the general preferences.

I started with Studio DV - and the supplied IEEE 1394 card is what I have still have installed in my computer for all "firewire" needs, aka my Digital 8 Camcorder. Nice program and after some bug fix updates from Pinnacle and some great tips from the Studio Web Forum things worked well
Updated to Studio 7 - as a registered user got a good break on the Hollywood FX Plus plug-in - and things continued even better.
The need for more multi-track audio editing led to my purchase of Vegas Video 2 - subsequently VV 3.0 (currently running 3.0b, with no problems) with Studio 7 still installed on my system. No compatibility problems whatsoever and like most others on this thread, honestly don't utilize most of Studio 7 features since VV3.0 more than covers my needs - though the Hollywood FX Plus 3-D transistions are still utilized from time to time...

Long story short (sorry), I currently have Studio 7(7.13.5 latest build), Hollywood FX Plus, Vegas Video 3.0(b)- and Video Capture 3 and the 1394 card (included with Studio DV)... with zero problems - both programs capture flawlessly, though I tend to use SF VideoCapture most of the time these days - and both programs render fine with their own Codecs (I utilize the Ignore Third Party Codecs in VV and leave the Show All Codecs unchecked in Studio 7 (maintaining the Pinnacle codec as the default).

I have Studio DV on my system with Vegas 2. It drove me nuts having the pinnacle codec always changing my avi dv icons to say pinnacle. Nuked all Pinnacle named codecs under control panel/sounds multi media/devices/video compression codecs/right click the codec and select remove. Studio still works fine.

THANKS!, To all.

I loaded both, checked, and unchecked the necessary,
and all is well.

Let me add, I am totaly happy with vegas 3b.,
and my only use for stu.dv7 is for the hollywood
effects, those are pretty cool.

Other than that vv3 covers all my editing needs.

Thanks again, to the best forum on the web!

I have VV3 and Studio 7 on my W2K system and haven't noticed any conflicts. I actually keep th Studio 7 software so that I can capture analogue stuff using the DC10+ card then transfer to VV3 for editing.

The above is mentioned in a (very) earlier thread.

Cheers

Hi CAPNDigital

You say that still ustilize Holywood FX Plus 3-D transitions; do you use these for projects edited within VV3? If so, how do yoiu accomplish this. I was under the impression that if you render from VV to a compatible file for S7 then render back for finishing off in VV you have lost critical quality x2.

Any advice welcome

Cheers

Two cents'worth: I just removed my DC10+ card and Studio software from my system. It shared the same IRQ as the firewire card (Sony VAIO desktop) but that wasn't the reason I took it out. Excellent MJPEG quality captures, but I have discovered the Dazzle Hollywood-DV Bridge, an external firewire device which converts any analog to and from DV. In my limited expertise, it appears to me to blow the doors off the picture quality of the DC10+, and makes the media (1) far easier to work with, and (2) subject to zero (in consumer terms) loss of picture quality in later generations.

I agree totally....
