VV3 ----> V4 Legacy Issue!!!!!!

d1editor wrote on 3/27/2003, 11:58 PM
I was having a horrible time previewing and printing to tape! Everyone made some great suggestions on the forum- but nothing worked---until I discovered the problem! I edit a weekly TV show and had current digitized files on my system using VV3. When I tried to use these VV3 files...my problem kicked in! V4 does not like the VV3 flavor of AVI!!! When I captured new footage- worked like a charm, and V4 previewd VV# MPEG 2 files to my external monitor!! This is a problem for people who use VV3 and V4 for a living! Can SoFo look into this and recreate the situation and hopefully correct the VV3 to V4 issue. I have "seasons" of shows stored on raids because the shows get customized for different sponsors!! This is my issue- all that work can only be re-edited on VV3---> this is horrible and hopefully can be fixed! Please!

"V4 does not like the VV3 flavor of AVI"

I don't doubt you are running across some kind of problem, but I am not able to reproduce it here- for me (and I am almost certain for thousands of other users) there is no problem opening Vegas 3 .avi files in Vegas 4.

Are these DV files? Do you have Vegas 3 and 4 on the same machine? The more details you can provide, the more we'll be able to help.

Thanks Sonic EPM: here are the specs:

Windows Version: XP Pro RAM: 1024 PC 333

Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz P4 Mother board: Soyo Dragon Ultra 533 bus

Sound Card: Creative Labs Audigy Gammer Video Card- Radeon 9700

CD Burner (make & model): Sony DRU 500A, Plextor 401240A

DVCAM: Sony DSR 11

I have an internal 200 gig raid using a HighPoint HPT Raid controller. All system BIOS and drivers are current... Windows Media Player 9.00.00.2980

Vegas Video 3 was uninstalled when I loaded Vegas 4 ----> I did not want ant internal software conflicks between the versions.

All video is DV captured via Sony DSR-11

I even went to the extreme of re-formatting my C drive and re-loading all my software---> not fun but wanted to have a very clean install. BTW- even this C drive is an IBM 7200 RPM 80 gig drive....

Infact- playing back the VV3 files, with external preview on- froze my system!

Any legacy patches would be great!!!

Legacy patches are not needed. Both V3 and V4 can live side by side with no problems as thousands of people can attest. Install Vegas 3.0c (from our website, updates section) and then Vegas 4. You should be able to then open your media with either version of Vegas.

I'll try it--- I have the CD's. I will let you know if it worked! So- I should uninstall V4 first...then reinstall VV3, followed by V4 again??

You shouldn't have to uninstall V4, but on the other hand, it wouldn't hurt to uninstall it either. However, i strongly suggest that you don't use the CDs. These probably contain the original releases with all their bugs. You should download the latest versions from SonicFoundry's website /download/step1.asp?CatID=2 so that you have V3.0c build 138 and V4.0 build 115.

Chienworks,

"...so that you have V3.0c build 138 and V4.0 build 115."

I have Vegas 4.0a build 119.

For those wondering- 4.0a is the build for the CD, no difference bug or featurewise from 4.0.0, build 115.

You might check one thing, your hard drive file allocation on the VV-3
computer and the hard drive allocation on the V-4 computer. A veg file made
on the V-3 computer (lets say it is 512 NTFS) will not work on the V-4
computer if the hard drive is NTFS 4096. Take it to the bank. It happened
to me.
