VV4 crashes after splash screen

I installed VV4.0 and the program installed without a problem. Immediately after installation, the program successfuly launched the first time. However, after I rebooted the computer, the program no longer loads. The splash screen comes up but then the program crashes. (The error message is listed at the end of this email.)
I currently have the Dell Inspiron 5000 notebook with and ATI Rage Mobility-P AGP notebook video card. Last week, someoneat SF customer service told me that I needed to upgrade the video driver to the Catalyst 3.x version.
However, the ATI website stated that the Catalyst is only for the Raedon family of graphics card and, in any event, can not be installed on a notebook computer. Finally, ATI directed me to the Dell website for video updates but I currently have the latest driver (ati2drab.drv 4.13.01.3011.)
Therefore, at this point, there is no way to update my video driver.

BTW: I have Vegas 3 installed also and it loads and performs perfectly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any USB devices?

Does disabling (unpluging) them fix the crash?

The reason I ask is because there is currently a know issue with our joystic support and Microsofts DirectInput. The issue itself is in the MS code but since on start up we query devices etc... Some systems with USB devices can cause Vegas to crash at the splash screen or thereafter.

4.0b will fix this somewhat by having a preferce to disable joystic support for those systems with this malady.

I unplugged all USB devices but, unfortunately, it did not solve the problem. The program crashes exactly the same way.
