W2K SP3 Delivers 24 bit. kewl

Just installed a clean W2K with SP3 on a 440BX-based system, PIII Coppermine. Motu 24i is the only audio hardware - installed the latest drivers. Audio applications are Cool Edit Pro (CEP) 1.2a, CEP 2.0, and Vegas Audio 2.0h.

MOTU Channels 7-10 don't show on the list, so I can "only" record 10 stereo or 20 mono tracks. I think I can live with that.

Vegas and CEP 2.0 are both delivering true 24-bit data. I'm a happy boy.

What is the Windows bug that only allows 10 stereo/20 mono tracks? I installed SP3 last evening hoping it would fix that problem on my Frontier Montana expander card with no success. I was really hoping this was fixed with SP3.....damn!

I already was getting true 24 bit record as far as I could tell without SP3 on my Dakota.

I guess the only solution is going to ASIO for Vegas. Let me repeat this again for the Sonic Foundry people.....ASIO for Vegas.

On a different computer running XP (the same Motu 24i) I could would get only 16 bit data when recording 24 bit with Vegas 2.0h. On the same computer I could get 24 bit data when recording with Cool Edit Pro.

The new computer that is now running W2k was never tested before SP3, so I cannot REALLY claim that SP3 fixed anything, except for all that kmixer stuff I read when trying to get Vegas working on my XP machine.

The XP box is a VIA-based motherboard. The W2K box is INTEL 440BX. That may be the biggest difference.

In either case, I'm glad to be rid of W98. The setup and configuration of W2K was much smoother than the previous W98 install, and now when recording a full compliment of (10 stereo) tracks, CPU is only running between 50%-60% (PIII 750), where it would be very near 100% on W98 (12 stereo tracks). I do NOT show the waveforms on any tracks when recording. Saves a lot of CPU.

I installed it today everything seems fine with my MOTU gear.
