With Gary, its ALWAYS about money. Geez... Tell us Gary, how much do YOU stand to make on this "deal" for giving forum members email addresses to Amazon?
GaryKleiner wrote on 9/24/2003, 4:20 PM
Give it a rest, Billyboy.
BillyBoy wrote on 9/24/2003, 4:28 PM
You're the one that should 'give it a rest'. What next, an offer to join your Get Rich Quick sceme?

I'm with BillyBoy. Sales messages in a forum like this is nothing but spam. Do it elsewhere.

I'm not going to take him up on that offer, but what's wrong with him offering me the possibility to get a Vegas related product for less money?
I've seen other threads regarding people posting deals on cheaper drives, DVD burners, etc.
Gary's offering me the chance to get the DVD tutorials for cheaper than I could by myself.
I can't see how this benefits him directly, but it certainly benefits other forum users who take him up on that offer.

The point is Gary didn't and probably won't say how HE would profit from the deal*****. Again, using the forum to try to generate cash for yourself regardless who does it is wrong. Period.

**** you should be aware Amazon has a reseller program where you can sell books as a agent.

Is this what Gary is doing or something similar? I don't know. He didn't say. The first question is WHY would Gary want your email address? Maybe because so he buys x number of books at a deep discount and sure you get a small discount and he runs with the cash for his "services" as agent. This forum isn't the place for that kind of thing and you all know it. Because once it starts everyone will want to do it and there goes the forum.

Someone saying hey look you can buy XXX for N dollars is a totally different kettle of fish and a public service because the person telling you about the offer is only giving you a heads up, not profiting any way himself from the deal.

Two recent examples when a hard drive was on sales for a extra low price and the freebie graphic software offer with a magazine. In both cases the posters didn't profit.

Gary didn't start his offer to benefit YOU, he does it to benefit HIMSELF.
That's a big difference and what's wrong with it.
GaryKleiner wrote on 9/24/2003, 7:16 PM
>Gary didn't start his offer to benefit YOU, he does it to benefit HIMSELF.<

You are quite wrong about that, but there is no point in trying to change your mind, because I know that is just not going to happen.

The fact is, that anyone who refers others to buy the same item for 10% off also recieves an amazon credit in the same amount, so yes, there is a benefit to me.

I was not focused on that however, I was just trying to save people some money.

If I do realize any benefit, I will gladly donate it to the charity of BB's choosing.

It's unfortunate that a couple of people on this forum continue to foster an environment of hostility and suspicion.

Im with Gary on this one.. So what if Gary makes a few bucks.. everyone else is getting a deal too.
Rather anyone cares or not I had a situation in my life with a friend since 6th grade I graduated in 86 do the math about 20 years roughly. I sold him an item for 125$ he sold it back to me 2 years later for 125$ I turned around and sold it for 150$ and he got mad.. i couldnt believe it. He ws willing to not be friends anymore over a measely 25$ ... WOW. Some people are hard to understand sometimes.. They cry and whine..

anyways.. Gary Kleiner i believe is the fella that sells the Vegas tutorials on DVD for a more than honest price.. i didnt see him doing any gouging there. i dont understand why someone would be angry with this post??? What gives????.........
MyST wrote on 9/24/2003, 7:59 PM
It's too bad that lately it seems we're getting into "which side are you on" type of posts.
Billyboy, I agree with you that people starting threads for the sole purpose of gaining profit for themselves is wrong.
In this case, I'm offered the opportunity to save some $$$ and learn how to better use Vegas at the same time. If Gary makes the same amount that I'm saving...so what? I'm still ahead of what I would have been had I not got on board with him. Great for me! No?
Also, I would think Sony would decide if his posts are appropriate or not. They obviously have his e-mail, I'm sure they'd contact him to tell him to stop if it was a problem for them. No?

M

PS: Again, I'm not looking to buy the book, so I didn't accept Gary's offer.
BillyBoy wrote on 9/24/2003, 9:47 PM
I don't want to see the forum divided into camps either. At the same time for someone to try to take advantage of the forum isn't right either. That's why its a good reason to prohibit 'those kind' of posts and do it now.

It is amazing some of the same people that harp endlessly on looking "professional" don't have a problem with people using the forum in that way which surely does not add any professionalism to the forum. In fact it makes the forum look rather tacky.

The only entity that should advertise or mention any kind of "deal" should be Sony. After all they host the forum and it is THEIR web site.

When you visit the forum you shouldn't be forced to see some thread shoved in your face where some joker says 'Want a discount on DSE's book'. That's rude and VERY unprofessional. Odd, since Gary loves to remind us how 'professional' he is. Not!

Its like sitting in a church service and someone getting up and following the usher passing their own hat. You simply don't do it.

Gary,

Thanks for the offer. I'm not ready to buy the book just yet, but if I was I'd certainly want to take advantage of this discount.

Thanks again.

Gary,

I wish you would have posted this about a week ago! I ordered the book, and just got an e-mail that the book has shipped! Yea!

I ordered it the same day that I ordered your videos. In the first few minutes from your video I learned some real good time savers. I can't wait to see the rest!

BillyBoy,

You have a ton of knowlage and you are always willing to help (thank you). I think Gary is doing the same thing, just trying to help us all out. I hope this forum will stay that way it is, a great compliment for the Vegas users!

Newbie...Duh! <---- I do understand your humor! :)

A lot of people help a lot - some more than others of course, but that's the nature of the forum: You help where you think you have something to contribute. And you do it for free.
Now, some people are so helpful and clever that they think they should offer a bit extra help and then charge a little money for it. I'm not saying that's a bad idea. I'm not saying the offered help is no good, nor that it's over-priced.
I'm just saying that this is not a forum for pushing merchandise, no matter how good or appropriate the merchandise may be.
There's been a few examples of people soliciting trade here - some more subtle than others. I mean, if you have a web-site that has free benefits like tutorials and stuff but also sell stuff, I don't don't mind the occasional plug for that site. But Gary went beyond that. He was using the forum for advertising a downright commercial product. That's spam, and it is insulting to the spirit of this forum. Even if he did not stand to make a buck from it himself.
If that doesn't annoy you, give your email address to Amazon and wait till you find out how many people they sell it to.

shoot... capture....edit... HAVE FUN!!

Man, do I disagree with both negative points above.
First, PLEASE let me know when I can find helpful material to make my productions better, easier, cleaner and more exciting. If you,or anyone else has a product that helps my Vegas production, please post that message so I can find out about that service or product.
Second: if you can save me some money, golly! I'd really like to know about that too!!! And, hey, if it offends someone, that's just a difference of opinion. Let those who run the board, moderate it as well.
Worse case sinario, perhaps those asking for money in any way could put a "OT: $'s" in front of the message. That way anyone who MIGHT be offended, could just not read that thread.
hmmm... well, just a thought... -mjr

Gary, need I remind you that no good deed ever goes unpunished?
vitalforces wrote on 9/25/2003, 3:16 PM
I know, too many replies. But I agree with BillyBoy (welcome back). You shouldn't post a message on some other company's forum which generates financial gain to you, without at least disclosing what you make from the deal. Many companies will immediately delete such postings.

The general idea is that forum users voluntarily help each other. Look at what Satish and BillyBoy alone have contibuted to Vegas users without gain.
MyST wrote on 9/25/2003, 8:21 PM
"Many companies will immediately delete such postings. "

Sony has seen fit NOT to delete this thread. Why do you figure that is?
Before you say that it's because they haven't browsed these forums in a while...try to find the thread that was dedicated solely for the purpose of ridiculing Zippy.

Remind me again about proper behaviour on these forums?

M
BillyBoy wrote on 9/25/2003, 9:05 PM
So-called "proper behaviour" is in th eyes of the beholder. I was roasted on a stick for the innocent use of "duh", others have whined none stop about the imagined shortcoming of Vegas and other SoFo products and those threads remain.

Now that this is a SONY forum, and no longer run by some little Wisconsin company few outside the audio field every heard of sooner or later some corporate type from Sony headquarters will send a memo explaining how the forum should be "managed". That isn't a reflection on how this forum is or isn't "managed" now, or how it was or wasn't in the past, rather a reality of a being just a little cog in a giant world wide corporation. I've been on boths sides the fence, being the person getting that kind of memo and also the one writing it. <wink>

The point in case its lost on some is this is no longer small potatoes. Sony being a world player wants to and WILL have the image it thinks is appropriate in forums it supports. I assure you that image does not include hucksters advertising their wares. Not in a Sony forum. Bet the farm that's policy that sooner or later will be enforced STRICKY.
bobojones wrote on 9/25/2003, 9:19 PM
You were roasted on a stick because you continued to mock fellow posters. 'Duh' was the straw that broke the camel's back.

> I was roasted on a stick for the innocent use of "duh
MyST wrote on 9/25/2003, 9:33 PM
Bobo...Please, please post replies that have something to do with Vegas every once in awhile! You're starting to come across as one dimensional with this "let's get Billyboy" routine.
Do you have an opinion on this thread topic, or were you just trying to find a BB post to reply to again?
NOBODY, including yourself will ever be able to deny all the great things he's done for Vegas and Vegas users.
You don't like the way he posts...fine, click on the "Ignore this user" tab and be done with it!
