Those NVME drives look pretty cool. Any noticeable performance benefits other than loading times? How do they compare to traditional SSD's performance and price wise?

BruceUSA wrote on 4/7/2018, 4:20 AM

Performance benefits are huge in general really. The computer very snappy, open app is insanely quick, loading everything are extremely quick. when I import a footage into the vegas timeline, I don't get a chance to see the building peaks as I used to see on my other desktop with standard SSD. Standard SSD have a reading of 555. This bad boys read over 3000 MB, huge different. A 7200 rpm hard drive read only about 200 MB. Most newer motherboard supports NVMe M.2. My MBO have 3 of this slot in default, I can run 3 more with optional adapter.

bro how do I tell if i have a nvme m2 slot>? Is there an app?

I see panasonic evo960 512gb M2's are $200. that seems ok

Bob. Your mbo manu will tell your mbo support nvme or not. Also, M2 ssd are not same class as nvme m.2. They are very different in speed.

While this is the first I hear about it, the NVM Express wikipedia article gives me the impression that all you need is the PCI Express (PCIe) bus on your motherboard and the right drivers, which apparently come with all versions of Windows since 8.1 and can be added to Windows 7. Other OSes seem to support it as well.

But, do your own research because, again, this is the first I heard about it, so I may be misunderstanding it.

@BruceUSA

Sounds great: a 16 core 32 threads CPU.

Can Vegas keep all this power well employed ? is it running at a reasonably high CPU usage percentage when previewing and when rendering ?

@Red Prince

AFIK you are right - one problem, however, is if the Mobo can boot Windows 10 from a NVMe

BruceUSA wrote on 4/7/2018, 3:19 PM

If you want to boot from NVMe in Windows, you better off start with a board that is support NVMe natively,

All I can said is I am extremely happy with my threadripper running at 4ghz. You probably seen threads from others saying their cpu reach 80% usage for just apply 1 lut to the timeline and not getting full framerate that without GPU supports. My 1950X can take 4 luts applied to the uhd footage at best/full framerate and cpu usage is only around 15%. . You can doing rendering a project and or working on another vegas project without breaking a sweat.

Open vegas take 6s, open lightroom take a splash of the screen, lightroom pop open. What I like the most is how the video footage import onto vegas timeline, instant, like magic. I don't get to see building peaks anymore.

i think that's the best you can get, I have similar pc and it takes a similar time, the only thing can do is wait for software optimization

I am always do multi task on my PC. I almost rarely use only one app at a time. I used 3 screens and always have app open for specific task and the threadripper is a good choice for that. My other PC is a 4930K 6 cores at 4.5ghz doing good but cpu usuage always end up with 100%. When it is at 100% it become laggy when working with another app.
