War movies

I really know nothing about it, but Clint Eastwood has done a movie about the WWII battle for Iwo Jima in the Pacific that will be out soon. Clearly this will be compared to Spielberg and "Saving Private Ryan". I hope it will be nearly as good or better.

So, in Private Ryan, Spielberg set new visual rules that have been since copied many times. I asked in this forum and was told how the stroboscopic look of the beach battle scenes was accomplished.

All I have seen so far of the new movie is a few snips in teaser ads. So far, I'm puzzled. Looks very cold visually. More like Normandy than the Pacific.

No telling yet what this movie will be like, but so far, I'm puzzled by the look of what I have seen.

I know this is pure speculation, but I know speculation happens in the fourm (especially on Vegas releases.)

Any thoughts at all about the coming movie or related subjects?

Actually, he made two movies about Iwo Jima--one from the American point-of-view (Flags of Our Fathers) and a the second from the Japanese point-of-view (Letters From Iwo Jima).

The trailers and clips I've seen over the past many months, at a passing glance, appear to be in black & white. But when you look closer, there is an almost imperceptible hint of color. In the explosions, for example, the fire's full color is present in an otherwise colorless image. Interesting idea!

Insofar as Spielberg is concerned, I think Eastwood will march to his own beat. He's never been bound by what other directors have done.

I never got sold on those Magic Bullet type looks, ah la "Color by Deluxe". I really liked the Disney and 3 part Technicolor films. Show it the way it is not the way we think it is.
