Was this an attempt at "replace media" bug?

I can't repro this after closing the project and reopening, but am posting in case this is some kind of clue to the dreaded replace media.

Had a large timeline - over 60 minutes - with over 80 clips. All AVCHD. Had a clip already in the timeline with filename Clip0001.mts. A visiting editor added a clip with the same name located on the same hard drive in a folder one level above the original. Brought it into project media via "import" rather than than straight to timeline through explorer as I usually do.

In project media window both clips showed the correct paths and lengths although with the same name. The original clip0001 was under 4 minutes in length, the second was over 20 minutes. When bringing the newly imported clip to the timeline, the old 4 minute one was the one that appeared. We did this several times with both clips from project media, the same original 4 min clip was always the one that came up on the timeline. Dragging the newer clip in via explorer brought up the correct 20 min clip, but in project media only the use count of that clip changed, a new entry wasn't created. Try dragging to timeline again from project media, the old clip shows up.

Closed the project and reopened and all project media pointers are now correct. Can not repro after reopening project. Everything now working as expected.

I had two scenes replaced last night on a timeline, but they were named totally different, same directory. Luckily, the timeline showed the correct name and time code reference, so I just called up the clip that was supposed to be there and added it as a take.

V11. I have not had this happen for a while.

Since *** I just click Garys Timeline Tools (current version is -Timeline Tools Version 1.040) extension and in seconds it checks my project and tells me if there are any replaced footage in it.In my working project I was aware of one replaced footage - but the Timeline Tools found another one.

The scenario is usually that the replaced footage doesn't show up until the saved project file is reloaded. Does Timeline Tools warn you that footage has been replaced before you can see it?

Most recently I have only had generated still media (captions/subtitles/comments) replaced with random frames from the video, so confusion over file names is not significant in my case.

Peter

When you select the display filter to Show misnamed Takes and Media, Timeline Tools goes through all the Events on the selected Tracks checking for Events where the Take name is not the same as the Media File Name. This check happens when you initiate it.

I'm probably one of the few not using timeline tools yet, and it looks like time to start.

This behavior was just so odd and never experienced before, so I thought I'd see if anyone else had seen it. I'll report to SCS too just in case it's a potential start of trouble.

Thanks,
Larry

But Generated Media do not have a file names. They are stored in the project file. So would this help in my case?

I'm sorry Peter. When I read your post, I misinterpreted what you were asking. I've not heard anyone else experience the problem you're describing.

When you use the Timeline Tools display filter to show only mismatched media, it skips over all events that contain generated media because, like you said, generated media doesn't come from a file. If your problems are limited to generated media events, this option wont help.

However, there is another filter option to only show generated media events. If you have a large number of regular media events, with a few generated media events scattered among them, this filter option only lists the generated media events in the display grid; making it simple to move the Vegas cursor directly to each where you can visually inspect it. It's not as helpful as the other filter option, but it will make it easier to locate problems manually.

I have had video clips getting mixed up in the past, after extensive shuffling about 1000 clips on the timeline. This can be hard to pickup, so Timeline Tools would be useful when this happens.

Fortunately, when generated media gets corrupted, it is comparatively easy to spot. The timeline display of crosshatch (for transparent background) with text becomes an image.
