wav plays at wrong sample rate

I have made a piece of music in a MIDI program, recorded it to wav and exported it. When I play it in Vegas 4d it plays back a little slower and lower (corresponding to the difference between 44 100 and 48 000 Hz). If I export as 48 k or 44.1 k it plays back equally.
In Sound Forge 6 it's the same story, but there, when I change the properties of a 44.1k file to 48k, it plays back "correctly" afterwards. In Vegas, changing the properties makes no difference whatsoever. If I play it from explorer or from the timeline it's the same.
Can anyone shed light on this, please?

Not exactly. I work around it by recording the midi analogly in Vegas (instead of exporting wav from the midi app). I have to sync it up then - because I do one instrument group at the time, to get a better final mix. But to that end I include a sync mark at the head of each file, so it's easy to line them up.
These files play correctly, and if I change the properties, Vegas recalculated the sample rate on the fly (well, almost) resulting in a playback with variating tempo (but constant pitch).
My suspicion is directed to the synth on my soundcard - a Kurtzweill not particularly up to date. (I'm going to post a question in the appropriate forum, if Neil doesn't jump in with a quick explanation.)
BUT: This problem began after I had installed I think it was Vegas Video 3 or Sound Forge 4.5.
