Way OT - Windows Task Manager

TomG wrote on 12/14/2005, 6:12 PM
Sorry to get so far off topic, but when I used to launch Windows task manager, I would get a standard window where I could close it down when done as well as change users, logoff, or turn the computer off, etc..

Now all I see is the window with the tasks that are running and three options of ending the task, switching tasks, or cancel. I can't find a way to close down the task manager!!!

I am running XP. Does anyone know why this might happen and how to get back to the "standard" taskmanager window?

Thanks,

TomG

Tom? - I've crawled all over TM and I can't see/think what you've done!

However, are you seeing the Toolbar? Can you see the big RED X to close it down? Can you close it done from then Quick Start bar at the bottom of the XP window? Have you changed some display setting?

Weird!

Um, close the window like any other window?

Check your hidden icons on the lower right corner of the screen. Try right clicking on the screen that comes up when open the task manager and see what is available.

Did you log on as someone other than a user with admin privileges?

Is your computer otherwise working fine?

I have instances where something was going wrong and I ended up getting multipe Task Manager Windows that wouldn't close.

Thanks for all your suggestions but the answer is "no" to all of them. The task manager doesn't even appear in the notification area. It does show up in the launch area but I can't even right click on it to close it. There is no red "x" showing appove the app window.

The only way I can shut it down is to restart.

This happens whenever I start the task manager (which gratefully isn't too often). Sounds like this is an oddball situation that none of you guys or gals have ever encountered.

Your Task Manager is running in the so-called "Tiny Footprint" mode, a mode where the title bar, status bar, menu bar, etc, are all hidden.

To get back into the normal mode (where the title bar, menu bar, etc, are shown), just double-click on a blank area of the Task Manager window border.

Double-clicking on the border when in the normal mode will put it into the "Tiny Footprint" mode - presumably you did this accidentally to cause the change in display mode in the first place.

You can see Microsoft's explanation at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=193050

Mark,

You are truly a wizard!!! That worked just fine. I must have accidently entered the "tiny footprint" mode. I didn't even know that feature existed.

Thanks again for saving my sanity!!!!!!
