WD Firewire Digitize Problem

gallois wrote on 8/31/2003, 4:07 PM
Just got a new Western Digital Firewire 200Gb drive, 8MB cache and 7200 rpm spin, and when I try to digitize from my DV cam (GL2) direct to the firewire drive it hangs up. Where might the potential source of the problem be? The firewire card? The drive?

Vegas 4c,
P4 1900 mhz,
1 Gb ram,
Win2000,
Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller.

Thanks for any opinions/advice/gossip, etc.

What's the setup for data routing? For example, I have a PCI IEEE 4-pin port and a PCMCIA card with a Belkin 2-port IEEE adaptor out to a Maxtor 120 GB external drive. I cannot flow data simultaneously into and out of the 2-port PCMCIA card to the external drive. Some forum users speculate that a PCMCIA card will not support the raw data flow required of digital data both in and out at the same time.

1. I capture into the PCI port and back out the PCMCIA to the external drive.
2. I edit and render in/out to the external drive just fine via the PCMCIA(probably suffering a frame rate loss).
3, I must copy a rendered file to the C drive from external drive via PCMCIA,
4. and finally PTT (print to tape) back out to my camcorder via PCMCIA just fine.
5. I can transcode an SVCD off my external drive *.avi via Nero 6 to CDRW with no problem.

Bit of a work-around mosiac, but I can get the job done. All due to the configuration of external drive, PCI, and PCMCIA.

Hope this helps, DGrob

This may be the case here as I can digitize to drive C, D, or E, and then copy it to the Firewire drive, from which I can edit. Thanks for the response.

But am I correct in assuming that digitizing to external firewire drive isn't possible?

Define digitize please. Do you mean simultaneously capture in and export out to the firewired drive through a single PCMCIA card port adaptor? If so, I haven't been able to. So I capture in via my PCI firewire port and simultaneously export to my external drive via my PCMCIA firewire port. DGrob

I have 2 of the Western Digital External Firewire drives, (200 Gb) and I can capture to either with my desktop, or laptop, and use either as my primary editing drive. You must have a configuration problem. I use a built-in firewire connection on my laptop, and a SIIG Combo firewire/USB2 card on my desktop, but have also used an Organge Micro firewire PCMCIA card on my laptop as well, without difficulty.

DGrob, I mean just capturing video from a DVCam or a Canopus converter to my PC (not a laptop). As MDVid pointed out he has no problem so it must be a config. mismatch.
