A few days ago, the same day the Acid 4 pop up starting appearing, I've had nothing but trouble trying to access these forums.

Problems:

1. Acid 4 pop won't go away, every button click brings it up
2. Edit button no longer shows, can't edit my posts or change preferences
3. password not accepted, need to constantly type it in over and over

I've been talking to SoFo, they say nobody else is reporting this. They've given me several different passwords, don't make any difference. Cleared out all temp files to get rid of all cookies.

Using version 6 of Microsoft's explorer.

Anybody else seeing this kind of strange behaviour? I've added nothing, changing nothing. All my hardware and software is the same, everything works fine except trying to access the forums.

Do you have cookies enabled? If you disable them completely then you'll see a lot of the things you've mentioned.

Sounds like you have cookies disabled (at least for this site).

That's how the server is able to remember who you are (or what you've seen) when you go from page to page on the site.

Resolved it myself. The problem is a poorly written cookie.

I access the web through a proxy server for security reasons. The proxy server randomizes using a chain of IP addresses so it appears to the cookie everytime my browser sends a message to the server the cookie wrongly thinks it is a "different" person at at "different" URL attempting to log on with my password. This results not only in the Acid 4 pop up window reiniating every damn time your click any forum button, it also prevents the Edit Account button and also throws you into the default settings so I can't increase font size or set the number of posts or even pick threaded or non threaded.

It is interesting to note I have no problems at all with other forums or for that matter accessing any web page through the proxy except now and then only the So Fo forums. In fact I had no problem at all accessing this forum unitl that lame Acid 4 pop up was added.

Another example why many people hate Java script, pop up windows and cookies. Bad enough when they work and when you can at least dismiss them. Unacceptable when the "web master" don't have a clue HOW to properly write the cookie and inconveniences customers.

you might be interested in Opera, which has an option to always load popups in the background. since it's an MDI, you won't get a bunch of windows all over your desktop either.

it also has one-button on/off for Javascript, images, and some other good stuff.
