weird play of avi files in Windows Media Player

I have some rendered files in avi format. They always played fine on Media Player. I just replaced the hard drive and we have upgraded the version of Media Player to 7.x... Now it plays jerky and slow.. Any idea what I'm doing wrong??
Any help would really be appreciated..

My thanks to IanG and Grazie for their suggestions.. I upgraded DirectX from 8.0 to 8.1, but I don't think that small ver upgrade is what did it.. I looked in Device Mgr and both drives had DMA unchecked. Checked them and rebooted and now all works as before.. Probably better..
