Weird problem importing .AVI

Steveocee wrote on 9/8/2013, 5:53 PM
Hello,
By no means do I understand most of this movie editing stuff yet but I'm struggling.
Using MSI afterburner I capture game footage then use movie studio platinum 12 to edit them. All of a sudden it stopped allowing me to import the .avi files saying it could not open them.

Any ideas as it's driving me mad as windows movie maker can use them quite happily. I don't understand how it suddenly stopped working.

AVI comes in a million flavors. Download MediaInfo and let us know what's in them.

A codec prolly got disabled or is now missing.

However, rather than downloading the K-Lite codec pack as recommended, you should figure out which specific codec is needed and download/enable that. Never install a third-party codec "pack"

Download and install the demo Mainconcept MJPEG codec from its manufacturer (does not expire).
As mentioned above, never install a third party codec "pack" on an editing machine!
Steveocee wrote on 9/11/2013, 3:21 AM
OK will try that, any chance of a referral to a codec that doesn't leave a watermark? I don't know why my MS suddenly stopped taking these videos in.

Should it also do it with RTV1 files?
Steveocee wrote on 9/11/2013, 3:32 AM
OK,
Downloaded the mainconcept MJPEG codec, installed it.

What do I do with it now? It still won't open my video files.
musicvid10 wrote on 9/11/2013, 8:35 AM
There is no watermark in the decoder afaik.
Did you reboot your computer after installing the codec?
You could upload a short sample of your original MJPEG so others could check it on their systems.
There are mjpeg decoders in ffdshow, but I recommend against it and can't help you with it.

OK, it' still not working for me.
Here is a link to my site, I've hosted a 2 second file there which is not openeing for me;
http://www.stevecarter26.co.uk/video-test.html

Just click and download and hopefully bring my sanity back.
musicvid10 wrote on 9/11/2013, 8:49 PM
The download would not open in Vegas Pro 8.
Ran it through AVIDemux and it opened fine (Copy, Copy, AVI).
Hope that restores your sanity.

OK,
Now MS wont open up files from my action cam.....
These worked fine and well but now wont open, sample in same place as earlier;

I cant understand this
Steveocee wrote on 9/12/2013, 5:18 AM
I don't know if this helps at all but I can open all the files normally with windows media player and also with windows movie maker.

It seems to be a MS issue (to my untrained eye)
musicvid10 wrote on 9/12/2013, 11:20 AM
2nd file opens normally in Vegas.
Sounds like maybe you already installed a codec pack?
Steveocee wrote on 9/12/2013, 1:38 PM
If anything I've removed the mainconcept codec. Still can't get the "original" video to work though.

Will try another video tonight if I can to see if it has remedied itself. I have a horrible feeling I may need to full re-install my whole OS to put my mind to rest.

It just catches me how 1 day it worked fine then the next day it didn't work at all.
musicvid10 wrote on 9/12/2013, 1:41 PM
Try disabling GPU, it "may" be drivers.
You need the MJPEG decoder in many versions of Vegas, don't know about yours.
Steveocee wrote on 9/12/2013, 4:02 PM
When you say disable "GPU" how do you mean?
I don't use built in graphics, I have an AMD HD7950 doing the graphical work, do you mean disable through MS or disable "in general"? (Hoping not in general)
musicvid10 wrote on 9/12/2013, 5:21 PM
In Vegas, just something to try.
Steveocee wrote on 9/14/2013, 8:59 AM
OK, weirdly the 2nd video on my download page works now in my movie studio.
That was after removing the mainconcept codec.
Warper wrote on 9/16/2013, 9:17 AM
Steveocee, have you got any other screen capture software installed?
I've heard similar story for Bandicam vs. Dxtory The latter one installed its own variant of mjpeg codec that blocked bandicam's mjpeg from working properly.

Also, as far as I remember, MSI Afterburner installs 32-bit mjpeg codec. What bitness of Movie Studio do you have? If it's 64 bit, then you need to install 64-bit vfw mjpeg codec.

As a sinde note, windows movie player uses codecs of different type, so playability in WMP might have nothing to opening file in Movie Studio
Steveocee wrote on 9/16/2013, 2:10 PM
I installed OBS and Xsplit about the time it broke come to think of it, I looked at starting to stream. I'll whip them off and see if it sorts it out.

I am using 64bit version MS so I guess I can try finding the vfw codec, wondering if i can't run a 32bit MS?
Steveocee wrote on 9/17/2013, 2:45 PM
Removed everything else that could record so I only have afterburner on now and still no joy with this.

Does anyone think a reinstall could fix this?
Steveocee wrote on 10/28/2013, 11:44 AM
OK,

Found out with lots of digging that MSI seems to have done something with their codec making it a pain in the ass with the way it compresses causing issues in general.

I now use DXTory and the lagarith codec and I am working again with better results than ever!

Thanks for sharing!
Good to know you found the way out of that mess.

Glad you found a workaround.
