weird V 8 Error

I don't think I've ever seen this before. Vegas was working fine yesterday. Today I opened it and started to get to work. but whenever I tried to play the project, or preview an .avi or .wav file from the vegas explorer, I get the following message:

"An error occurred while starting playback. An unsupported media type was requested"

basically nothing plays back in Vegas, though other media software (Win Media Player, Sonar) work fine.

Installed 8.0b and it still doesn't work.

anyone know what's going on here?

strange. i think I've seen this before. Might be a codec issue. Did you install a codec pack lately? I've had BAD experience with pak's replacing good codec's.

wow. I don't even know what a codec pak is.

But no. I shut down late last night and all was well. this morning I get this business.

I'm stumped.

I finally thought it would be good to look at the "details" of the error message and it said Microsoft sound Mapper didn't exist. Hah? So I go to audio device prefs and see the audio playback device is set to MS sound Mapper, and not ASIO Fireface, which it ought. so I set it to the FFace and bada bing, stuff plays.

To paraphrase the immortal Gov. William J. LePetomaine: I think I'll go out on the golf course and work on my putz.
