Old system: Pentium D 2.8 Ghz XP Home 32-bit, DDR2 RAM limited by OS (+/ 3.7 Gb.)
New system: AMD 6-Core 3.2Ghz Win7 Home 64-bit, 12 GB DDR3.
SATA2 Hard Drives transferred from old to new.
No overclocking on either.

As those who know me here are aware, I am a serious amateur who has a particular visual style the uses substantial FX and Partileillusion .pngs, and my platform is mainly the Web though I work in HD format, i.e. my Canon HV30 does 1920x1080i. As a rule, I like to work large to get most snap even though I end up obviously down-rezin'. Typically I'll render out an HD master into a half-size 960x540 for things like Facebook, YouTube.

I do not work in 3D so no point going there.

The basic issue or question is how to optimize Vegas to take advantage of my new system -- i.e. even after all these years, I'm still unclear how much RAM to allot to Preview RAM. Any other tips or in-Vegas tweaks and such most welcomed.

Thanks.

Slightly OT P.S.: As stated recently at an other thread, I will not divulge the generous soul who was kind enough to offer me their v10 license due to my financial constraints so as to respect that individual's privacy, but it is a long time member here. I wouldn't be posting this question without that generosity (you know who you are :o)

hi philip,

a. it should read 64 bit, not 56, unless you bought the discount version ;-)

b. obviously you know os on 1 hd, video material on another.

c. i've found ram set by sony as default has always worked well enough in my systems, even when using shift+d

d. i've never thought the gains you get from over-clocking are THAT amazing, unless you spend a great deal of money on the environment, ie. cooling, mb, and other potential bottle-necks in the system... ymmv

e. check what services you have running at start-up or background (ie.av).

f. avoid letting programs 'run' at startup - scanners, printers, word, acrobat, etc., all have a 'run at start' up component that's totally unnecessary on a editing pc.

but no matter what, enjoy your new machine

This is not a direct answer to your question about Vegas optimization, AND I don't remember your involvement in this forum's earlier postings, but musicvid's technique of AVCHD->Vegas->DNxHD->HandBrake->YouTube sounds like a perfect match for your work. see:

HD Video for the Web - Guide for Vegas Users

Also, 960x540 is is a good framesize for direct display using a local Flash Player like JW Player. Also (as I recall), Apple TV has standardized on this resolution. However, Have your ever noticed that YouTube offers a choice of 1080, 720, 480, 360, 240? I would choose one of those widths for the video upload. There has been much discussion about this here: Vegas to Youtube, Vimeo, Web -- A New Look, but it seems that (at the present state of YouTube's technology) 1280x720 is the sweet spot. I don't know about Facebook, but I suspect 1280x720 is a good framesize for that platform, as well. btw: just to be picky, 960x540 is quarter-size of 1920x1080 [I'm not being a jerk - just having a little fun with you!].

...Jerry

Edit: I guess I should note that, afaik, the Canon HV30 records in HDV format (rather tha AVCHD), but the workflow referenced above is still a good one.

@ushere,

"... it should read 64 bit, not 56, unless you bought the discount version ;-)"
Ah, a phunny soul indeed. Corrected.

In terms of other recommendations, I pretty much am a hawk about those - occasionally screw up by disabling some Service that shouldn't be -- but the Microsoft gremlins let me know - lol. And truth is, RAM has never been a problem for me for some reason -- even back on XP. I run a constant CPU/RAM GUI app and it rarely hits 50%, even less now.

Which brings me to....
Page File/s:

I've read all kinds of do-this or do-that - including adding page files to each physical drive other than the OS, as well as only on those and nix the OS one, etc. etc. Aside from my backup drive, I basically only have two others - one for all media files and one for renders). But in the end, I go back to letting the system decide.

@amendegw

I'll check into your suggestions though I'm more concerned with in-Vegas efficiency for I've got a ways to go in having anything I'd consider worth rendering and uploading right now :o) As far as non-public/commercial sites, I've been using JW for years for FLV.

As to the choice of 960x540, it's more to cut down on file size when there are Mb. restrictions. I'll go as large as I can get away with within reason. I'd rather have a wider audience that can handle a lower screen size than target just nerds with super systems. Hey, I'm a short-haired hippy populist (I saw Pink Floyd on their then-brand new album tour--Dark Side of The Moon - lol.)

Gotta bump this for maybe this part got visually buried in my above reply:
