What are you using?

Spot|DSE wrote on 2/3/2005, 1:30 PM
For transport cases? I'm looking to dump all my Anvil cases on Ebay, they weigh more than the gear I'm carrying in them. I've got some Pelican cases, but they don't make one big enough to carry a pair of Z1's, accessories, and small lighting rig.
Open to ideas and suggestions. We have a VASST tour coming up, and I'd like to lighten the load.

i know you know about SKB, do they make anything in that size?

Nope.

How about a nylon case with custom foam cutouts like this?

http://www.moderncase.com/hotspot.htm

I realize that isn't a camera fit specifically but perhaps you could buy the right size with the foam not cut out and then cut it out to customize it to your stuff?

They are light and "Pack" the gear in foam all around. Plus if you cut the foam yourself you could get a lot of stuff in there.

Just a thought.

How deep would it need to be? I love Pelican (can't be killed by mortal men) and in my former life dealt with them a good bit on weapon cases....they make some double rifle cases etc that might fit the bill but the depth might get you.....they have one that is about 6" deep and you could put two Z1's end to end with no problem. One that comes to mind is the SPC-1759GC....I'll do some checking and get back with you.

edit: the 1750 is another "gun" case that might be deep enough. I think it's just over 6" deep

Are you flying with them? If it has to be checked, what else is there besides Anvil-bulk? (I really don't know)

Spot, I know budget isn't usually an issue for you, but I use a Doskocil case, (basically a less expensive version of the Pelicans) for my PD-150 and assorted accessories. Still built like a tank, though, bombproof, waterproof, etc. I think it's a bit roomier than similarly sized Pelicans, too.

The "Extra Large" measures 20 3/4" x 16 1/2" x 9 1/4" Inside dimensions: 18 7/8" x 14 1/4" x 8 1/4" .

Check it out at:
http://www.exploreproducts.com/doskocilsealtightcameraguardcameracase.htm

Why do you want to put 2 Z1s into 1 case into each in its own case?

boomhower wrote on 2/3/2005, 2:03 PM
The 1750 is 53" x 17-7/16" x 6-1/16"

Not something you would enjoy carrying around too much but I have flown with these in the past.....again, the depth may not work for you but you can get a bunch of stuff in one of these babies.

Next best thing would be the 1650 (32-1/2" x 20-1/2" x 11-5/16") and 1660 but you probably already looked at those. Wasn't sure if you had looked at the "gun" cases though.

Good luck....

I've got two of the 1750 Pelicans, one holds a subwoof and two surround speaks, the other holds the other 3 surrounds and all cables, etc.
I'm looking for a case that can hold in foam suspension:
2 z1's
4 litepanels
2 wide angle lens adaptors & hoods
2 U100 wireless mic trans/receivers
Mics for above
2 Anton Bauer packs
2 ultralight light stands
Gel kit
small case of "gak" (just small odds/ends/adaptors/tape/pliers/clothespins)
And have everything be TSA proof.

Spot,
You might contact Rob at WayOutWest. He picked up some military shipping containers (strong fiberglass with foam) at the local Reutilization and Marketing outlet that he might be willing to turn loose of. They were used to ship electronic equipment (audio, computers, printers, etc.) to anywhere the military deploys. They are light, strong, water tight, and most come with foam or some other type of packing. Also, you may be able to pick some up at your local military disposal sites. Here's a link to check out that consolidates all sites nationwide: https://web.govliquidation.com/ . There's loads of stuff out there and you can bid on it just like EBay when they have an auction. Hope that helps. E-mail me if you need more info.

Hey Spot, the can't hold that? It's huge ! (?)
Spot|DSE wrote on 2/3/2005, 7:13 PM
Nope, it won't hold all that safely. I might be able to cut a thin divider board to make it double decker though, I'd just thought of that earlier this afternoon. We can fit Mannie in that case, but it won't hold all our stuff. :-)
We've got a couple of these, too. It's also 30 lbs empty, too.
FuTz wrote on 2/3/2005, 7:52 PM

Ok. Maybe it seems a little expensive, but it's a deal !
Spot|DSE wrote on 2/3/2005, 7:54 PM
THERE ya go!! I've always wanted one of these! Kinda big for just two Z1's, but a great party house!
TimTyler wrote on 2/3/2005, 7:58 PM
Pelican cases are strong, and they'll repair/replace them no questions asked if you mail one back, but they're damned heavy.

New-kid-on-the-block Storm Cases are similar in construction, styling, and price, but they weigh less. http://www.stormcase.com/product_info/indexproduct.html

When you get it , you can even call miss Crowe and make that "a sequel" or "part deux" between NY and Paris - in high'def this time...

There's even room for a green screen... or blue... or both !
FuTz wrote on 2/3/2005, 8:06 PM
Nice stuff Tim !
The dimensions seem to be almost the same as Pelican though. So I guess no help for Spot for now (at least 'til he gets more stuff...)
Where are they made?
epirb wrote on 2/3/2005, 9:45 PM
Ah what the hell, might as well get some custom Carbon Fiber cases made up by Zero Halliburton. Your stuff wont be alot lighter but your wallet will!
MichaelS wrote on 2/3/2005, 9:55 PM
Spot,

I've used these for quite a while. They're super lightweight and tough.

Check here,

http://www.hardcase.com/index2.htm

and scroll down to accessory cases. Great for vehicular travel, but may not be suitable for flight cargo.
epirb wrote on 2/3/2005, 10:19 PM
Here this outa hold alota stuff..plus nobody will mess with it!
I'm dying to see you get one
Killer Case

or this one has wheels
Think outside the Box

We also use the Storm cases for the big stuff, the ones with wheels and a collapsable handle. Pelicans for the small stuff.
We also get cases custom made in the US by an ex Boeing guy. Uses vacuum molded aircraft grade fibreglass. This process isn't like normal fibrglass as it has a natural double sided finish. Never had one fail and they're extremely light and not too pricey. This guy doesn't advertise and only makes to order but does have standard sizes. Apparently he makes them in a Boeing facility doing a run once he gets enough orders.
If anyones interested email me at farssAToptusnetDOTcomDOTau and I'll try to get his details, give me a couple of days as it's already the weekend over here.
Bob.
