What CPU usage is normal with an MPEG2 rendering?

Is it normal to see CPU usage sit at 100% when rendering an MPEG2 file within Vegas?

I'd like to know because I'm wondering if my O/S is a little screwed up. I'd like to make sure before I actually go through the reinstall procedure.

The system in question is a P4 266 Notebook computer, with 512 RAM. and lots of Hard drive space.

When I compare the CPU usage on my desktop computer, it gets nowhere near 100% and natually the render time is a lot lower too. This system is a P4 3.04, with 2 gig RAM.

I realise that the Desktop system is more powerful, but should there really be that much difference?

Thanks.

Maybe,
mpeg-2 encoding is usually CPU limited however you'll reach a point when it becomes disk limited. Laptops are usually pretty slow in both areas so what you're seeing makes sense to me.

Would adding more memory help matters?

The main thing that effects rendering time in your CPU's horsepower. Adding more memory won't help to the extend you would notice. Add a faster CPU and you will for sure get faster renders. How much faster depends on how much faster the newer chip would be as you've seen with your desktop.
