What did I do wrong? First movie burned...

I created a movie in Movie Studio 4.0, save it as an MPEG2. I then loaded it into DVD Architect Studio 3.0, made some menus and used the "Show Me How" tutorial to prepare and burn the movie onto a Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+RW DVD. I received a message saying that the burn was successful, and it popped the DVD out.

It plays fine on my PC's DVD player (outside of no titles for the chapters -- some sort of user error there!). I then inserted it into my A/V system DVD player (a Sony DVPS330). It sat in the player for a minute or so, and then the player flashes "no disc" on the screen. Why?

Here's a link to the description of the disc I used...it claims to be Sony-compatible:

Thanks in advance for the help!

It's a booktype issue. The player does not recognize the booktype and hence won't play the disk.

Many set top players won't play certain types of burned media - and anytime you get into the re-writable catagory, compatability goes way, way down.

Generally you can expect 90% playability with DVD-R media. Probably 80% with +R, 97% (or better) with +R burned with a booktype of DVD-ROM.

I just checked your DVD player out on Sony's website and at videohelp.com. The users manual was printed in 1999 which made me wonder whether it would handle a +RW disc (it was old enough that the manual didn't specify what type of discs it would play).

When I looked it up at videohelp.com, it only listed -R, -RW and +R, but it looks like some of the folks that have posted couldn't even get all of those to work.

If your drive supports bitsetting, you might want to try changing the book type and see if that helps. If not, and you want to use +RW discs you may have to consider getting a newer DVD player. I have a newer (circa 2003) Sony DVD/VCR combo and it plays just about anything I toss at it, as long as I use good quality media.

Thanks to both for the feedback...and Gatman, thanks for the additional research! I'm not familar with a drive's book type. Is that a software alteration?

I purchased some Verbatim DVD-Rs tonight. I've tried 2 different DVDs, and received the same error when I tried to burn the movie:

"The drive couldn't determine the correct power for writing this disc. To solve this you need to use a different writing speed or a different brand of media."

In the Details section, there was this info:
'SFMMCX'-(17)
'atapi'-(1)
-'SONY DVD RW DRU-530A 1.0d'-(1)
Module sfmmcx.cpp Line 1795
A medium error occurred.
A Power Calibration Area error has occurred.

I tried both at 2x and 4x (the only options I could get) and received the same message. Does anybody have any ideas? This is the same drive I was using last week and it worked fine. Help!!

I'd start by checking to see if there are any firmware updates for your burner. If your burner only supports 2x and 4x media, it may have troubles trying to figure out how to burn 8x or 16x media (which are more common now than 2x and 4x media).

Scott -- you are a miracle worker! My firmware was 1.0, and there was a 2.1 version out there. The DVD has been burned and watched on my "old" DVD player. Thanks!!!
