I used Cool 3D about a year ago with VV, and it worked extremely well. I wanted to create a clean composite shot with the 3D over video or a still graphic. First, I tried placing a green background behind the 3D image in Cool 3D and chroma keyed it out in Vegas, but as we know DV is not the best codec when it comes to green screening, and there were green remnants around the 3D model. Then I discovered Cool 3D allows you export a series of Targa files with alpha channel. Bingo! The result is flawless. Well worth the money.

Hello,

Thanks for your responses !

Jab, I have tried Xara 3D too, and now I'm with Unlead Cool 3D. To my mind, Unlead is like Xara 3D but with a lot more capabilities. It has keyframes, a lot of customizable templates and so on.

Luxo, How do you export an animation from Unlead to VV ? I mean, I tend to export as an uncompressed avi with a green background, but as you say the chroma key is not perfect. What about targa files ? I should use targa for stills, shouldn't I ? What would be the best way to export an animation from Unlead to VV ?

Thanks a lot.

Robert.

I’ve been using Ulead Cool 3D for about a year now and I love it for creating 3D titles and animations. I’ve found lots of 3D objects on the web that I’ve converted into .X format and imported into Cool 3D. The key framing really gives you full control over the animations and the effects like fire and lightning are outstanding.

The best way to export to AVI is uncompressed using 32-bit RGB (instead of 24-bit which is the default). This will create an alpha channel in the video that you can key out cleanly within VV3 (no messing with multiple TGA files). I think this is the easiest way to get Cool 3D animations into VV3.

If you don't mind getting a slightly older version of Cool 3D, MicroCenter has version 3 for $9.99. FYI, the current version is 3.5.

Total of $15.98, including shipping? You bet. I'm going to try it, and probably end up getting on their "update for . . . " list when I register.

Forgot to mention: One of the things I actually DO miss from some of my previous NLE programs is high quality 3-D titles. SF, please update your titles.
