what do you think of Nero 6?

i downloaded a free trial of Nero 7 and i like it so far. i noticed that nero 6 is pretty cheap to buy for when the trial runs out.

some questions:

what do those of you that have it think of nero 6?
what does "ultra" have that "suite" doesn't?
would you recommend 6?

i want to use it for sinply burning data dvd's and perhaps some music applications like maybe file converting. some places are selling it for only $5, should that concern me?

thanks!

Nero 6 is very good as an all purpose burner. I have been using it since version 4 and have never had any problems with it.

I only use the basic package so can't offer advice on the ultra or suite versions. However I think ultra is the US version and Suite is the european. This forum http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=48 will probalby have all the answers for you.

I love Nero 6. I have the Ultra Edition, however I don't begin to use all the features of it. I mainly use it for backing up files to DVD RW, making audio CD's, copying CD's and DVD's. I love Nero Recode. With it I can take the files output by DVD Decrypter and burn DVDs that fit on 4.7 GB media.

I have both version 6 ultra and version 7. I installed version 7 and went back to version 6. Version 7 was too buggy. I would not hesitate buying version 6 if the price were right.

I don't.
In my job everybody who comes to me with problems is using Nero. It tries to be all things to all people and hijacks your PC installing itself as default application for everything it can.
I use Record now DX for all routine burning of both CD's and DVD's and have never had a problem. Also rips Audio CD's.
For DVD Video, Video CD etc I use a proper authoring program such as DVD Workshop, DVD Lab, DVD Architect.

Malcolm, that's very odd. I've never seen Nero hijack anything, I've installed it on half a dozen computers and not had any such problems with it.

On the other hand, the only thing i use it for is burning or copying discs. I've never even been tempted to use any of it's other functions.

When you install it, you have the option of telling it which file types you want it to be the default for. Perhaps you didn't see this?

A PC supplier preinstalled it on one of my authoring PC's because I forgot to tell him not to install anything.
When I tried to uninstall it Windows still tried to use it.
I reset file associations but it was still in the pop up box.
I know a lot of people love it but so far every single person who has come to me with problems trying to create a Video CD or DVD has been using Nero. It may be fine for simple burning of CD and DVD ROMS but for the rest I dont need the grief there are better programs.

I've had the same sort of problems as Malcolm on a couple of PCs. I wont let Nero near anything, now!

nero seems to be the best/most popular tool for burning data discs. i use it exclusively for burning data discs and it works great and supports double layer discs. i also got it pretty cheap (nero 6).

on the other hand, i tried it for authoring video dvds and i was very disappointed. their templates are not very good. DVDAS beats the pants off of nero for authoring.

I have never considered Nero 6 to be a replacement for a full DVD authoring package. It is nice for someone who "occasionally" needs to do a small video creation to have this ability without having to pay a lot more money.

I have 6 and it works great for what I use it for. I don't feel like my computer has been "hijacked" as someone else put it.

I have also heard that Nero 7 is (was?) buggy. So I have avoided buying the upgrade for a while.

~going a bit off topic here but do you know if Record Now can convert (audio saved in) mpg, avi or wmv to standard audio files like wav, mp3, wma or cda? or does anyone know how this can be done?

thanks!

Vegas Studio handles those conversions for you perfectly well. File / Render As (or Make Movie / Advanced) and choose .wav or .mp3 as the output file type.

~ooooooh! ADVANCED render. that's why i didn't see it! swell! thanks. VMS is pretty dang cool : )

~ does anyone know for sure if the Nero 6 "OEM Suite" version supports double layer"?

~hey thanks,

the article mentions DVD-R DL. i should have been more specific in my question. i would need it to support DVD+R DL. i looked at the prodct info for "6 ultra" and it just says double layer with no reference to -/+. i know the trial for v.7 did support plus.

~i found this:

Nero 6, World's First Double Layer DVD Recording Software

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_2004_Sept_7/ai_n6183431

the article makes this mention:

"All of Nero's applications in this enhanced version of its OEM digital media suite fully support DVD+R DL drives."

~what version is being referenced here? does "this enhanced version" refer to all of the Nero 6 OEM Suite software? i just found out that there is a 1, 2 and 3 editions.

appreciate any help so i don't get stuck with the wrong thing.
