Vegas kinda mixes up the operational definitions of "render" and "encode", since it usually lets you do both operations in one step. "Render" means to assemble various source media into a single output file. "Encode" means to translate that output into a different format. So, if you "render" your project to uncompressed AVI then you are rendering and not encoding. If you place that uncompressed AVI file on the timeline and "render" to MPEG2 then you are encoding but not rendering. If you "render" from your original project to MPEG2 then you are rendering and encoding at the same time.

Make sense?

~yes, makes sense! thanks for breaking it down.

so rendering is the "true" uncompressed file with all it's original dynamics and encoding is compressing that file so it's smaller and more functional at the (hopefully unoticable) loss of some of the original dynamics. is that about right?

~can someone point me to a resource that can explain in simple terms the rendering options available in VMS4 and what their appropriate applications are? (goodness knows i've already tried to get the mysteriously elusive full manual to no avail). i want to learn what things like how many Kbps and fps to use in a given situation and when is right to use M-PEG and other specific formats, resolution sizes etc. i don't want to get in over my head yet but i was wondering if anyone knew of a good overview to get me started.

i think this is probably more than i could ask of a forum setting such as this but if you are willing to try to explain (or if someone already has) i'm all ears!

t h a n k s!

elusive manuals? perhaps you haven't looked at the top of the forum page. If you hover over support and click manuals you can download any manual you want.

another tool for you to find out what you want is to do a forum search of past strings. If you click the Search link next to the forums link and you typed in something like 'render' or 'rendering options' and hit enter you can mine a "lotta gold" out of here. have fun with it!

~thanks rus. i actually tried the downloads at the top of the page a few months ago and it was only the quick start version. there was a whole thread inquiring into it and every lead led to a quick start manual including the software disc itself. i've never understood it.

thanks for your response
