What happened?

Sony puts out this press release in April touting it's wonderful 64 bit 4 core perfomance at NAB to be released by the end of 2007.

And now we get V8 and it's all good and everything but where is the promised features. Sony needs to explain what happened.

Many of us upgraded machines and moved to Vista 64 and Sony dropped the ball in preparation. I certainly hope they don't think they are going to rip us for another upgrade fee in the next 6-9 months. V8 feels like a point release to me, not a major revision.

Nothing happened. They were showing a demo/beta of a 64bit version that they said might be available at the end of 2007 (probably beta testing). The way I figure it that is almost 4 months from now.

we haven't even entered the final quarter of '07, so Sony i still well within their announced timeline. But as it usually goes with software releases, more likely it will be early '08 before it's out.

That's all well and good but the history here is an annual fall release of an upgrade - 1 upgrade fee per year. If they think they are getting another upgrade fee in 6 months, they are NUTS.

that's what the "pro" apps do & people wanted vegas pro!

$150 is nothing, even $300 for this and 64 bit version is cheap compared to what others charge for upgrades. That's assuming they would offer it for the same price, but who knows, they could just give it away to all current Vegas 8 owners ( very doubtful though ) , or they could charge anything from $1 to a couple of hundred.

Don't know what they are thinking, but if your need a 64 bit version, no matter what it is it will be worth it. Many other pro app upgrades cost $500 - $1000 every single year , either via upgrade prices or maintenance.

I am really liking V8, but it is what V7 should have been. so really it is a $135 bug fix and a $135+$150= $285 upgrade form V6-V7 and V8 64bit with DVDA bluray/HDDVD and an improved titler (the new one improved) is what this V8 should have been and probably will be 6 months from now. I think that is why this upgrade price was so cheap, so people wont bich as bad when the real V8 comes out. The $135 bug fix was certainly well worth it, thanks Madison!

BruceO,

The price paid for the upgrade is the same upgrade special price they have offered since, Vegas 4.0 to 5.0. It is the same price I was offered to upgrade to 6.0 (I skipped) and then again to 7.0 (took) and now 8.0 (also took). This is no special circumstance pricing.

The Vegas 6 upgrade price was $250 with a $50 dollar discount making it $200. That was announce during NAB in April 2005.

Vegas 7 was the first $135 price. That was a fair price.

Vegas Pro 8 is also $250 with a $100 discount and that is a great price for what you get.

I too would like cheaper but in the grand scheme $135 is not that much. I was paying $200 a year for Corel updates so I can live with the upgrade cost. A pair of shoes or a couple of video games could cost that much.

I don't think anybody is forcing you to buy both. Plus, like was said, they could make the 64 bit version a point upgrade.

Not trying to flame or be cynical; just being realistic.

A yearly support contarct with Avid is about $5,000/year.

To Vegas 6 was only $250/350 if you went from non-DVDA to DVDA. That's what I did. Upgrading from one version to another of the same app was $150/250 I recall.

I have been editing on Vegas since ~1996, so I am familiar with the upgrade pricing I paid. I think the upgrade is extremely cheap. $135 is the lowest it has ever been that I can recall. but I consider the V6 to 7 $150 + $135 $285 the upgrade to what V7 should have been which is V8 right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see V64 + DVD architect HD sooner than the 12 month cycle.
