What happens re rerendering MPEG2 is this situation?

You put an MPEG2 file on the timeline & then make 2 cuts on this clip & delete the section in between & fill the gap in with another clip in either AVI or MPEG2 format. What happens when you eventually render this again as an MPEG2? Does the entire project get rerendered again or does this happen just to the inserted section? What happens if the project were outputted as an AVI file?

the entire file is re-rendered, and it looks like crap compared to the origional, unless you use high bitrates. IF you want to split mpeg's , use TMPGenc (www.tmpgenc.com) the mpeg 1/2 splitting is free, but the mpeg-2 encoding it on a 30 day trial basis (but will still split mpeg 2's).

If I use TMPG or similar program to cut my existing MPEG2 file can I assume that my original MPEG2 footage won't be re rendered? What happens to the insert? Can I assume that if it's an AVI insert that whis would be rendered but if the insert was already MPEG2 that it wouldn't?

If all the sections are exactly the same format, same frame size, same bitrate, same frame rate, same colorspace, for both video and audio, and your output file is the identical format, then TMPG should be able to splice rather than rerender. If any of the sections are different then they will need to be rerendered.
