What have I done wrong, or forgotten?

Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/2/2005, 1:00 PM

Okay, I got all the programs reloaded and Vegas is set up except for one thing. I'm running Vegas on two monitors--the timeline and timmer on the left monitor and everything else on the right. When I close down and reopen, the stuff on the right monitor has moved to the center of the left monitor. Didn't used to have this problem.

Evidently, I forgotten to set something, but for the life of me I don't know what it is. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Check the settings of your video card. Vegas should leave things whever you put them.

It's all video card settings, and check to make sure you have the latest video drivers installed.

Yeah, I've got the latest drivers, I think that's part of the problem! Now it separates the two, but the windows on the right monitor are stack on top of one another when I reopen Vegas, instead of being laid out like I originally arranged them.

Jay , get it set up yhe way you want, then save it as test veg or whatever, then when you open vegas it "should" keep your settings.
Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/5/2005, 7:51 AM

Dave, I tried what you suggested, but it didn't work.

All the individual windows remain separated, but they are all stacked up on top of the timeline on the left monitor when I open Vegas--they won't "stay put" on the right monitor! I gotta be doing something wrong or overlooking one small item.

Have you tried saving your own screen layouts?

CTRL-ALT-D # to save layout
ALT-D # to recall layout

This sounds like Vegas is crashing on close and not save your work area.

Edward, forgive my ignorance, but I don't follow what you're suggesting.

Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/5/2005, 8:36 AM

Hunter, are there any other indicators that would support your theory? Anything else I might look for?

Jay? Have you ever saved a workspace configuration? If not this is mighty powerful medicine!

Grazie, I don't know. Maybe I did in the beginning, because I haven't had this problem until now--when I had to reformat the HDD and reinstall V5 last week. Maybe I forgot that I had to do this, as well as how to do it.

I was just wondering if you got the layout the way you wanted and saved the layout, can Vegas recall it correctly?

If you exit, restart Vegas and the layout is incorrect, can Vegas still recall it correctly?
Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/5/2005, 8:45 AM

Edward, yes, I went to the Help menu and found what you were talking about. I just did that--saved the layout. When I closed Vegas, I had to "recall" the layout, which it did nicely. But I didn't have to do that everytime I opened veags in the past. is this indicative of something?

Grazie wrote on 7/5/2005, 8:48 AM
Ah Jay! You really sound steamed . .. sorry mate!

I guess Edward was attempting to see if your install was at least "saving" the workspace area you define . .. and you don't need to do "saved" workspace areas to check to see if your install is happening. Guess Edward was/is checking something else by his suggestion.

Hang in there buddy!

Have you checked your Windows monitor layout? Right click the desktop-Properties-Settings. You should have at least 2 monitors next to each other, and detailed in the display and the drop down list. Sometimes mine mess up after playing with the TV display. John
Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/5/2005, 9:08 AM

John, yes, that was the first thing I did. It all seems to be set up correctly. When I placed the web browser on the right-hand monitor (it originally opened in the left, monitor #1) it stays there each time I open it.

I wasn't clear enough in the previous post. Under the settings tab, - click Advanced, you should see an array of tabs. On mine (ATI), click Display, and un-enable the TV, so Windows recognizes that you have 2 monitors, not 1 monitor and a TV, so Windows puts everything on the primary (#1). You may need to reset your right as the primary monitor and stretch your desktop again. Hope this helps. John
Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/5/2005, 9:14 AM

John, right! That's what I was talking about--that's all done and set up properly.

[edit]
By-the-way, I have an ATI card, too--Radeon 8500 with the latest driver date 5/12/2005.

Jay, sorry you're having problems getting it to recall correctly automatically. But at least now you know the saved layouts feature works and can be used as a workaround until a final solution is found. Your base layout can now be easily recalled even though it's not yet automatic.

Yes, thank you, Edward!

eh . . . can you try a different keyboard? Please? Is this the same keyboard you used before? I got a hunch! - If it doesn't work, meaning you get the same result, then nothing lost - yeah? - G ;)

This mirrors what I was thinking.

When I first set up XP I went to great pains to mimic a couple of features of Linux. I tried to move my user directory to another partition so if I filled it I wouldn't also fill up the system partition.

The problem is that some programs will only write files to a user folder on "C:" so I'd have all sorts of troubles with photoshop writing to "D:" and then trying to read the file from "C:"

But before you go down that road you need to make sure that the Nview utility doesn't have any sort of smart window placement feature turned on.

Another possibility is to put your monitors back into the default layout. Go to control panel and turn your second display off. Reboot and turn the display back on but just leave them where you found them.
