what is 24p?

i read some posts talking about 24p, what is it. How does it give a film look? i have a sony dcr trv 460 and does anyone know if its 24p or what? i also heard that its possible to turn your project into 24p even if it was recorded different format. I am new to video editing and it is my becoming my hobby. Thankyou.
