Serial number for what? Which product are you upgrading from? SonicFoundry/SONY Media serial numbers are 20 letters in the form of xx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx. If the number you are entering isn't in this format then you may be trying to use an activation code instead of a serial number.

Thanks for the repies.

I am trying to upgrade from Vegas 4. In "Help|About Vegas" on the menu bar I get read: "registered to "my name"" and a string of letters and numbers in this format xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-xx.

Customer support is my next stop. Thanks again!

Where's the hard copy of your original registration number? I believe the number on the help - about screen is the "secondary" registration number.

That's right, the number in the help section isn't the serial number needed.
Something nobody's mentioned is that the serial number you're trying to input needs to be yours, and only yours. If this number has been used by someone else, I believe you'll be denied the upgrade.
I'm not trying to imply anything here, just saying that that's one reason.
