What is the simplest way to trim ?

GoodEnough wrote on 2/25/2017, 4:51 PM

User's Manual is useless garbage.

Can you do me a huge favor?
Can you open a sample media file, and write down EXACTLY what keystrokes you use to DELETE :10 to :20 ?

I literally mean everything you type.
I am having trouble using the keyboard to start/stop.
SPACE just starts at the beginning, for example. (Not PAUSE)

I want to
1) PLAY
2) SKIP to :10
3) MARK
4) SKIP to :20
5) MARK
6) DELETE

All with keyboard.

What commands should I look up to do this?
PS: I prefer not using the mouse

Also, will I be able to save the short video quickly without "rendering"?
Or will it need to reprocess every frame? (slow)

Trimming without a mouse is not easy, you will need the mouse to go quickly to the desired position or to create a region for the desired position (4:00 to 4:20). The easiest way to trim is to create a region with the mouse and then CTRL+T.

GoodEnough wrote on 2/25/2017, 5:45 PM

Nothing you wrote works, unfortunately.

CTRL+T does nothing after I've marked with I & O .

How do you "create a region" ? What is that?

How do I delete a selection?

I pressed I and O to mark the start and end.
I see the little YELLOW flags. on the timeline.
When I press DEL, the entire video is gone.

Is the SELECTION the entire VIDEO TRACK?
Or is it the section marked by I & O ?
The ENTIRE VIDEO is still highlighted by the green rectangle.

I do not use a mouse to FINE TUNE select a specific point on a timeline. I use JKL keys.

You have to cut the video, press "s" when the cursor is where you want the first cut and again where you want the second, highlight the section between cuts and press delete.

(For the easiest way to trim you need a Jog-shuttle, the simple version is perfect)

As said working complete without the aid of a mouse is difficult, but not unpossible.

After marking I&O points on the timeline, press Shift+Q to select the region you just created with I&O, then CTRL+T, which will cut the event at the I&O points and delete the parts before and after the I&O points.

A better and easier way is to trim directly in the trimmer-window, instead of on the timeline, just step through your video with JKL keys, mark the I&O points and press A. The part between I&O is automatically inserted after the cursor on the timeline.

Also in the trimmer window it is possible to create first subclips of selecting areas, which will be listed in the media folder, which than can be put on the timeline later.

There are even more ways to trim, and as far as I know, they're all described in the help file (which is definitely not useless garbage) .

GoodEnough wants to delete the part inside of the selected region, Strg+T does vice versa - it deletes everything outside.

So after having set the Loop-Region using keys I and O, press Shift+Q and Del.

3POINT wrote on 2/26/2017, 7:20 AM

Marco, you're right. Trimming is normally selecting the part you wanna keep but can also be ofcourse the part you wanna delete.

Hit ENTER instead of SPACE to play/pause or change your preferences for the spacebar.

I am using the basic version of MS13, and it does not have the Shift+Q feature. There is no "select Loop" in the menu either.

3POINT wrote on 2/26/2017, 10:00 AM

In my MS13 Platinum this is Shift+Q feature is working. I don't have experience with the basic versions. Maybe a good reason to upgrade to MS14 Platinum!!!

Marco. wrote on 2/26/2017, 11:50 AM

It's true. If you don't drag the Loop-Region with the mouse there is no way to get it activated in the basic version of Movie Studio. You can't do that with Shift+Q in the basic version. This only works from Platinum up to the Pro versions.

So if this should be done in the basic version of Movie Studio without using the mouse for creating the Loop-Region, than splitting the points via key S and then deleting the middle part is a good way to do.

Or combine the Split command "S" for the In point and the Trim Start command "[" for the Out point.

GoodEnough wrote on 2/26/2017, 1:07 PM

Yes, I am using Split. Once I split out the footage to be removed, I need to select it with the mouse. I don't like that. So, I can DEL, How can I first highlight/select the recently split section without using the mouse?

Marco. wrote on 2/26/2017, 1:26 PM

The last method I descibed in my posting above works without touching the mouse.

If you want to use the split method without using the mouse, one way would be to first split at the Out point, then split at the In point, then press Delete.

I don't understand what you're trying to say.

WHAT DO I PRESS, EXACTLY?

Can you open a sample media file, and write down EXACTLY what keystrokes you use to DELETE :10 to :20 ?

I literally mean everything you type. With NO MOUSE.

Marco. wrote on 2/27/2017, 5:15 PM

On US keyboard layout your sequence would be:

Move to :10

Press S

Move to :20

Press Alt+[

If you (like me) use another language setting for your keyboard layout, search the software's help menu for the "trim start" command, or mouse-hover this command button below the timeline to see which key is used in your language setting.

At least, this works without touching the mouse and it works in the basic version of Movie Studio.

GoodEnough wrote on 2/28/2017, 5:00 PM

What you wrote does NOT work.

When you press Alt+[, it just moves the cursor back to the start of the current section.

It does NOT delete anything.

Marco. wrote on 2/28/2017, 6:28 PM

I do this hundreds of times a day and it always works. This works with Vegas Pro, Movie Studio Platinum and the basic version of Movie Studio (since SCS introduced the trim feature).
Last time I used this keyboard command in the very basic version of Movie Studio 13 Build 208 was some hours ago and it works fine.

All keyboard commands may depend on the language version of the software you installed and on the language setting for the keyboard (in the way for the same function the key to be used may differ).

Which language version of Movie Studio 13 and which language setting for your keyboard layout do you use?

crofter wrote on 3/1/2017, 1:22 AM

Works for me,I've always used a mouse for most things in movie studio, this method is very simple and effective and something I'll use from now on,thanks for this, the thread hasn't been a total waste of time lol.

GoodEnough wrote on 3/4/2017, 11:31 AM

Ok, I tried this again, and it worked. Not sure what is different, but now it trims up to cursor.

This is perfect. I can now edit without mouse.

S to split, then I FWD over discard footage, then press ALT+[ to resume saved footage.

THANKS
