What project type to use when using Prores422 clips?

Hi.

I tested Prores422 clips recorded with Ninja star from Canon XA50 came with Clog3 option on. Which project type should I use to achieve 'optimal' picture quality?

  1. 32bit (sRGB view transform) and apply Canon Clog3 image each clips via clip properties?
  2. Use 8-bit full and apply Clog3 camera LUT via colour grading tool? Clog3 in this case is built in LUT supplied by Vegas.
  3. Use 8-bit full and apply official canon LUT (BT709_CanonLog3-to-BT709_WideDR_33_FF_Ver.2.0.cube) by assigning track LUT effect?

If using 32-bit project, colour grading tool feature such as offset does not work logically in my opinion while in 8-bit it works. How does Vegas internally handle clips on 8-bit project before rendering (for example in which stage '10 bit clip data is converted to 8-bit)?

I tested each 3 ways and image looks are slightly different. All are somewhat good but just curious which option would be the best in terms of grading, rendering time etc.

Vegas 19 pro version used.

Hope that my question makes sense.

It depends on what final target your post edit goes for.

1, if it's SDR production, the 8-bit fullrange environment meets most requirement, the LOG-footage has no advantage but also no suffer.

2, if the post edit contains many composite gradings, the 32-bit floating point (fullrange) modus is the uttermost one to avoid post artifacts such as color banding etc. Here does the LOG-footage show its 422-fineness or LOG-gamma-flexibility.

This floating point modus can also out put intermediate with proper CODEC e.g. ProRes.

Be aware! This modus is not ACESpace (view transform = off).

Be aware, all the editings above are SDR-(semi-)production.

As soon as you turn on the view transform (now it's ACES), you are supposed to go producing HDR10-videos.

Here, the LOG-footage yields its maximal gloria. Here you can out put your timeline back into ProRes422 LOG-Clog3 or what else intermediate.

32 bit video and try the Clog preset in the color grading panel. You'll have to deal with computer and studio RGB levels manuaily.
