What's the best way to sync the audio and video?

What is the best way to sync the audio and vido tracks in Vegas Video3? When I play back the video and audio, I can't match the lip movements to the audio as the preview window skips enough frames that I can't tell if they match or not. I've set it to draft quality (assuming that this would give me more frames displayed), but this seemed not to make a difference.

I'm running Windows XP on a 2 GHz pentium.

You'll have to line up the audio tracks. Listen for which one is late/early and then use the 4 or 6 key on your numeric keypad to nudge it until they are lined up. Use the mute button to alternate between tracks so you can recognize which one is late.

Sometimes you can use the peaks in the audio graph to get pretty close before starting the nudging. Position your curser on a part of the track that has a nice clear sound like a voice, cough or twang of a guitar. When the reverberating sound is gone, you've got 'em lined up. It can be tedious work, but with patience and a sharp ear, it's doable.

After you get them lined up, if you are going to be splitting and deleting a section, be sure to make your split on all four tracks so you don't risk throwing then out of alignment again. Splitting all the way through is a good practice even if you will only be deleting the video from one of the tracks.

I like 2Road's statement. Look at the audio waveform as if it was video. Once you get em "close", zoom in a little, create a loop region, zoom in some more, start nudging. Key off what you see in the preview and the what the waveform is showing, while listening.
Get em the way you like, do those splits 2road mentioned, and then you can keep the sections in sync to each other by selecting just the the tracks involved, then select the synced aud/vid events, and hit the G key for grouping, and you can use that LOCK feature also to keep em locked down to the timeline as well...if need be.

How is it coming?

on your system you shouldn't have any trouble seeing synchronized sound and video unless your track is loaded with effects. the sync should be tight, especially in draft mode. if you are trying to synchronize two tracks that have somehow moved out of sync, then they other suggestions should help you a lot. but if you are just viewing captured video, and things don't look smooth and in sync, then something else is most definitely wrong.

David,

I can't add much to the other answers, which are all good. I do suggest that you do the tutorial in the VV3 manual, because the first section of the tutorial deals with this very thing.
