What software can burn to Pioneer A09 (DVR-109)?

johnmeyer wrote on 3/8/2005, 4:36 PM
As I described in this thread (Pioneer A05 suddenly destroys -RW disks), my old, trusty A05 started acting up. I got a new Pioneer A09 sent overnight, and it is installed. Just one problem: my old trusty Nero 5.5 doesn't see the drive. A fairly extensive search on the web doesn't give me much hope that I'll be able to use Nero 5.5 with this new drive.

Question: Does anyone who owns recent Pioneer drives (A07, A08, or A09) have any recommendations on what I should do for software?

Nero v6 handles my A08's just fine.

If you have Forge or DVD-A2 why do you need Nero?

John,

You may not be able to wait. But something tells me the next version of DVDA will have this and another thing tells me that that the next version of DVDA is coming soon.

Perhaps an upgrade to Nero 6 is the best stopgap method until DVDA upgrades.

Good points, but Nero does a lot more than DVDA, Vegas, or Sound Forge.

In particular, with Nero I can do data disks, and also mixed disks (DVD video, plus data folders). I can do disk copies, which is very handy when client comes back and wants five more copies (I'm still getting orders for the Nutcracker, from three months ago). I can go on, but a general-purpose burning app is pretty important to have, even if DVDA gets beefed up in some future release.

Fry's recently had Nero 6 Ultra upgrades for $19.95, which probably means others have it too.

From what I can tell on the Nero website, version 5.5 can't calibrate itself to new DVD burners. If you plan to use Nero, you're probably going to have to update to v6, which incidentally works pretty well.

Nero 6.6 is on the way. It's been an expensive few days, not only in terms of purchases, but time. These upgrades seem to have a snowball effect.

I too have upgraded from a Pioneer A05 to a '9'. DVDA won't look at the 9, but Nero 6 is quite happy with it

I forgot about dual disc, h-264, data discs. Sorry about that. I actually have Nero for doing this stuff.

If I was you I'd be looking for RecordNow Max v4.5 with PxEngine 507(modified)
It is THE ONLY burning software that will give you the best compatibility and burns D9 perfectly.
Search the net for more info about A09 and burning issues.

I'm using the A08, no problems with Nero, DVDA, or any other app. Haven't seen the 09 yet, since we've not lost a burner in recent months. I too, use Nero regularly for burning data disks, etc.
All their High Def tradeshow and demo display footage was edited with Vegas, Nero's team really seems to love what Vegas lets them do.

Yeah, Nero is good but the last couple of updates (recode) are b0rked.
I use Pioneer DVD burner as well, and I've never had any issues with burning, but recent topic about A09 I think on CDRzone or CDfreaks forums changed my burning app.
So far, I've burned about 15 DVD's and no probs, so if ain't broken, don't fix it.

Nero is due here tomorrow. Nero 5.5 was rock solid for me, and I hate to learn a whole new program (RecordNow Max). However, I've seen many posts about problems with Nero 6.x, although to be fair, there were many, many posts a few years back about how horrible Nero 5.x was. I finally tracked most of that noise down to problem it had burning discs that Xbox could read.

From what I can tell, it may be important to do a really thorough uninstall of Nero 5.x before installing 6.x. Also, I hope I can do a minimal install to avoid all the "bloatware" that accompanies the 6.x update.

I also use the Record Now Max and really like its look and feel.

I use both Nero, CDA and RecordNow. All seem to do what I tell them to although I've had issues with Nero extracting from audio CDs. Vegas seems to do the best job of that of anything.

John - I did'nt read that you checked for a firmware update on the drive. Every one i've bought lately needed one.

That is the first thing I tried. I don't like updating firmware unless its necessary, so I was still running with the 1.00 firmware. I updated to the latest (1.33) and it didn't solve the problem.

Since doing the original post, I've purchased the A09 drive, and then opened up the old A05 and cleaned out the dust and re-lubed the rails. The laser pickup was immaculately clean, so I didn't touch it. I've put this trusty old unit in a backup machine because it still appears to make DVD-R disks that work just fine. I'll test a few of those with one of the testing tools that look for bit error rates, just to make sure they are good quality.

John,
In your last post I tried suggesting that the "mixed" reviews on the Pioneer A09/109 might make you want to consider the NEC ND-3520A which is cheap and has great reviews.
Lots of people have tried to hack Nero 5.5 to work with the Pioneer 109 and have failed. With Nero 6 there are buffer issues with that burner. Record Now Max 4.5 can be hacked to work with it so see if you can get your hands on a copy of that and I'll post the hack for you. Or better yet, see if you can return the drive and get the NEC.

I'm still waiting on the copy of Nero that I purchased. I've been able to create quite a few video DVDs with some other software I have and so far everything has worked well. However, that other software is pretty limited when it comes to data. If Nero fails, I'll use the RecordNow Max solution, with the DLL patch. I'd rather stick with the Pioneer, since I have not read anything that leads me to believe that it is flawed in a way that can't be fixed simpy by the software (or possibly firmware) catching up. Also, it was quite cheap, after the rebate (well under $100, even with overnight shipping).

I thought Nero was provided with purchase of the Pioneer 109. What came with the Pioneer?
