Vista 64 bit Ultimate has "things" that will install old stuff "install the same as XP32bit" and a vicious network "finder" and I just found a "memory tester".
Vicious---If you have anything that looks, smells, feels, and thinks like a network Vista will find it.

I have v7 and v8 on a Vista laptop. As long as you stay within a familiar application (Vegas) then you should be OK.
Where I have big issues is file management. There are 4 My Documents folders that I can see in Windows Explorer, but I can only view/interact with one of them. Depending upon the program I am using, it can save files in any one of the 4, I think.
I can only find about 25% of the files I need to back up or launch.
I am furious and want a replacement operating system. And I am a windows developer. Obviously not a Vista expert (LOL!) but I can't even use the laptop the way I am used to.
But Vegas works great unless I need to back up/package my projects.
Vista 64 bit solved a lot of my problems with XP 32bit. IRQ interference was reduced a bunch. I used the classic windows views. If the software I was installing was not compatible it would make it compatible.(not all the time) I could shut off automatic CD/Rom notification for about 18 different scenarios. I installed V8.0b, DVD-A 4.5b, Acid Pro 6.0d, Cinescore 1.0c, CDA-5.2b, Forge 9.0d, Cineform Neo 3.2.3, Debugmode frameserver & Winmorph & Wax, AVDC Canopus without viewing window, all Mike Crash filters, Ball & luminance transitions, Neat stuff, Ultimate S 3.1, Realpac 5, Gear shift 1.7, swap events script, Quicktime pro 7.4 and all DIVX programs. Networking is a breeeze. Virtual dub 1.7 64 bit did not work and also Nero 8.1.1 was a mess.
I get the impression you can "beat" on this OS profusely without doing any damage. The incessent warnings are a bit of a pain in the neck. I sure do miss the Deshaker script though.
