What will I lose if I upgrade

paul-marshall wrote on 10/23/2018, 5:34 AM

If I upgrade to 16 what features included with 15 wont work? I have upgraded several times over the years only to find that some lauded bonus feature upon which I have come to depend no longer works. If I take advantage of the Boris FX Continuum Key & Blend Unit offer will it still work when 17 comes along?

You can find out this all by yourself using the Trial version and beyond that : You can use all versions of vegas together at the same time and next to each other, so nothing is lost but maybe there are some extra's not available in a past of next version.

I will try the demo, I am interested in the motion tracking. That looks like it may be part of the core program.
But will NewBlue FX Filters 5 Ultimate, HitFilm Movie Essentials and NewBlueFX ColorFast 2 than came with 15 still work? Based on previous experience - no. Using multiple versions is possible but not satisfactory.

This issue has been discussed many time over many years on this forum, and my take away is that the bonus 3rd party inclusions cannot always be relied upon to function is future versions of Vegas - it all depends on the licensing arrangements between VP and the 3rd party plugin companies. As to whether VP16 extras will work in VP17, the likely truth is that we'll find out when VP17 is released.

A potentially safer way to get plugins that you really need is to buy the plugin/s direct from the 3rd party company because there is a much greater likelihood that they'll work in later VP versions. For example, Boris Continuum Units (OFX) - such as Key & Blend that you refer to - should continue to work in any NLE that supports the existing OFX structure.

I love it, because through "nesting" a small veg of an earlier version with something special that is not present in the newer version is my favorite workflow. I was happy that all that rubbish from the extra's you listed in your comment were not present in version 16. For me the NB stuff were real showstoppers in version 15 and they were gone after I deleted them all.

I'll have to try the nesting thing, but I agree with Dexcon that it is probably best to parlay the included plug-ins to buy the full version of whichever plug-in it is versus hoping that it will be compatible with the next version of Vegas. It is unfortunate the third party plug-ins are only good in one version of Vegas. What I am doing now is basically keeping a list of which version has what, then going to that version of Vegas to get the effect. That's especially true on some of the higher priced plug-ins where I might only like one or two effects and don't want to purchase the whole feature set.

paul-marshall wrote on 10/23/2018, 6:40 AM

Of course the whole object is to get us to buy more stuff, I get it. A few versions ago there was bundled a cut-down version of NewblueFX Titler which worked great for me. Needless to say it didnt work in the next Vegas version and I chose to shell out $$$ for the full Titler 5 rather than have to keep switching programs to update some things. But it leaves me angry at both Magix and Newbluefx that I have to do this and the $$$'s of value claimed by the marketing hype is only temporary. They dont tell you that.

@paul-marshall … unfortunately, you are by far not the first to be disappointed by this situation. And also, it unfortunately becomes a case of once bitten, twice shy.

A couple of years ago, I took the plunge and opted for Boris FX as my main go-to plug-in FX - wait until Black Friday in November as they have in recent years offered a 30% discount - a great entry offer. Whether that happens this year is another question as Boris FX have recently moved to a 12 months 'support/upgrade' period, though they make it clear that you do not lose use of their products if you don't recontract next year.

For me it is logical and normal that when something costs normally $ 100, and you can get it to use in a program for a special price of far less than $ 100, something that you can choose if you like to use it in that program or not, that the use of that extra is only for the program with which it came.
Most of the time it is possible to own that plugin as a standalone for a reduced price less than $ 100 so you got your trial and use for 1 program back.
Makers who does it another way are ruining their own business.

So I bought Mercalli 4 and New Blue Titler for special prices and they are running in all my Vegas versions, Pro 10,12,13,14,15, 16 and VMS 10,12,13,14,15. Sometimes (Sony times 😉) you have to copy/past some from/to the OFX Video Plug-Ins location.

To be clear for the last question I temporarily installed the suite extra's of VPro 15 and tested their use in VPro 16>>>>> no problem with Sapphire Render Unit from Boris, NewBlueFilters5Ultimate and HitFilm Movie Essentials Pack, they are all showing up and work in Vpro 16 with me.
Look for the comparison:

\I don't know that one, because it is not listed as a licensed FX in Vegas Pro 15 Suite, which it came with. It shows not in Vpro 15 nore in 16.

Yes. The Vegas Pro 15 bundled products have retails serial numbers so they will work in all versions of Vegas.

Not true for Boris FX plug in, at least the one bundled with for Vegas Pro 15 Edit (BCC 3D Objects).
Pls, see here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/boris-plug-ins-from-vegas-pro-edit-15-to-vegas-pro-edit-16--113519/

Also, i just found that VP Pro Edit 16 crashes if I install HitFilm Ignite 2017 express (with VP 15 Edit there was no issue at all).
